What is Technology?

Technology as an academic topic spans nearly every discipline, from business and education to law enforcement and the arts. Students in management, information systems, education, engineering, and communications courses regularly write about it because technological change reshapes how institutions operate, how people learn, and how society organizes itself. The topic is academically interesting precisely because it sits at the intersection of technical capability and human consequence, forcing writers to examine not just what a technology does but what it means for individuals, organizations, and policy.

The papers archived here reflect a wide range of approaches. Some take an applied, industry-specific angle, examining how technology functions within finance, hotel services, or human resources. Others adopt a comparative or evaluative stance, weighing the pros and cons of developments like tablet devices displacing laptops or the internet causing more harm than good. Policy and security-oriented papers look at tools such as closed-circuit television in law enforcement or internal and external security frameworks. A classroom-focused cluster addresses how incorporating technology affects learning, including among elementary school students with special needs. This variety shows that writers approach the subject through case studies, cost-benefit analysis, and sector-specific investigation.

A strong essay on technology picks a specific context rather than treating the subject in the abstract. A focused thesis might address how a particular technology changes a defined process, role, or outcome. Evidence drawn from data, organizational case studies, or documented communication patterns tends to carry the most weight. The most common pitfall is writing at too broad a level, describing technology in general terms without anchoring claims in concrete examples or a clearly bounded argument.

The organizational and human costs of rapid technological advancement
The development of technological advances has been significant in the last 50 years but more so in the last 30. According to Moore an early pioneer in silicone technology, the capacity for engineering technology innovation is clearly rapid. Moore set a benchmark for silicone technology claiming that capacity would double the number of transistors on a chip, which determines the capacity for memory every 24months. This law served as a standard for Intel and other chip manufacture companies, creating a demonstrative goal that was followed almost to the letter from its inception to now (Intel, 2011). This rapid advancement of technology has made many functions and aspects of technology capabilities possible as computers and servers can process more and more tasks and information more rapidly than ever. The result of these advances has been both an extreme learning curve cost as well as an extreme financial outlay for many organizations, both as a response to legal and legislative mandates and the need for competitive advantage development. Though the development of so much capacity and possibilities has made it possible to do and make many things faster and more efficiently than ever before people rarely if ever look specifically at the cost of such technology with regard to human attrition, due to inability to learn and update rapidly enough (Russell, 2011), the loss of organizations based on size and productivity and inability to shoulder costs of upgrading technology and of course likely the most looked at but still neglected financial burden of upgrading technology on a near constant basis. This work will look specifically at these three areas of the cost of technological advance, financial, individual attrition and small organization loss.

Government-mandated implantable electronic health record chips and privacy concerns
In a world in which new technology turns over nearly every day, individuals around the world, and particularly in the United States, continually jump at the chance to integrate these new technologies into their own lives. Generally, we as Americans view technology as a convenience, created to make our lives easier. From GPS systems in our cars to GPS systems on our children, it seems that no technology is off-limits. Perhaps, though, our continual interest in these technologies lies in our ability to take them or leave them. Some may view the placement of a GPS tracking chip in a child's coat as a dream come true, while others may find it excessive. How then, would a technologically-obsessed nation react if our choice to consume was taken away?
