What is Technology?

Technology as an academic topic spans nearly every discipline, from business and education to law enforcement and the arts. Students in management, information systems, education, engineering, and communications courses regularly write about it because technological change reshapes how institutions operate, how people learn, and how society organizes itself. The topic is academically interesting precisely because it sits at the intersection of technical capability and human consequence, forcing writers to examine not just what a technology does but what it means for individuals, organizations, and policy.

The papers archived here reflect a wide range of approaches. Some take an applied, industry-specific angle, examining how technology functions within finance, hotel services, or human resources. Others adopt a comparative or evaluative stance, weighing the pros and cons of developments like tablet devices displacing laptops or the internet causing more harm than good. Policy and security-oriented papers look at tools such as closed-circuit television in law enforcement or internal and external security frameworks. A classroom-focused cluster addresses how incorporating technology affects learning, including among elementary school students with special needs. This variety shows that writers approach the subject through case studies, cost-benefit analysis, and sector-specific investigation.

A strong essay on technology picks a specific context rather than treating the subject in the abstract. A focused thesis might address how a particular technology changes a defined process, role, or outcome. Evidence drawn from data, organizational case studies, or documented communication patterns tends to carry the most weight. The most common pitfall is writing at too broad a level, describing technology in general terms without anchoring claims in concrete examples or a clearly bounded argument.

Media worlds and their cultural significance
Neil Postman, in his book "Amusing Ourselves to Death" discusses how television has altered the medium by which information is transmitted, and the new nature of the medium forces the information being transmitted to be incomplete, un-sequential, lacking the ability to promote intellectual growth, and un-reasoned. Postman's book was originally published in 1985, a time when television was the main medium of information transmittance, however, several decades later the world is once again faced with a new technology that has fundamentally changed the way information is transmitted: the Internet. Much like Postman asserted that television has reduced the intellectual effectiveness of the nature of the information transmitted through television, the Internet, smart phones, pads and pods, and all the other new information technology tools have turned information into even more of a segmented, isolated, non-integrated, bits of trivia that have no relevance to the world in general.

World literature themes and critical analysis
One moment can change one's entire perspective on life. Being able to travel to a location I had always wanted to, allowed me to grow as a person and adapt favorable characteristics. Technology advances at a rate that may complicate ethics. Just as Mary Shelley addressed in "Frankenstein," all ethical boundaries must be thoroughly examined.

Research concepts and applications
A research question that will be raised and answered in the research proposal will be how to reduce information technology (IT) anxiety among social workers in child welfare settings and how to make them more willing to employ IT. The method for attacking this issue will be to make a comparison with online education and distance learning. Many of the same issues with regard to the lack of face-to-face contact and human interaction exist in online education and many of the same adaptive strategies are applicable to better employing IT in the social work arena. As in online education, the client who is better suited for face-to-face interaction needs to be routed in that direction and those who deal better with remote technology need to be routed in that direction. If the social worker sees a successful integration of IT, they will then be more likely to use it across the board. Hopefully, since children are involved, this implementation of technology will go more smoothly than feared by the adult social worker.
