What is Technology?

Technology as an academic topic spans nearly every discipline, from business and education to law enforcement and the arts. Students in management, information systems, education, engineering, and communications courses regularly write about it because technological change reshapes how institutions operate, how people learn, and how society organizes itself. The topic is academically interesting precisely because it sits at the intersection of technical capability and human consequence, forcing writers to examine not just what a technology does but what it means for individuals, organizations, and policy.

The papers archived here reflect a wide range of approaches. Some take an applied, industry-specific angle, examining how technology functions within finance, hotel services, or human resources. Others adopt a comparative or evaluative stance, weighing the pros and cons of developments like tablet devices displacing laptops or the internet causing more harm than good. Policy and security-oriented papers look at tools such as closed-circuit television in law enforcement or internal and external security frameworks. A classroom-focused cluster addresses how incorporating technology affects learning, including among elementary school students with special needs. This variety shows that writers approach the subject through case studies, cost-benefit analysis, and sector-specific investigation.

A strong essay on technology picks a specific context rather than treating the subject in the abstract. A focused thesis might address how a particular technology changes a defined process, role, or outcome. Evidence drawn from data, organizational case studies, or documented communication patterns tends to carry the most weight. The most common pitfall is writing at too broad a level, describing technology in general terms without anchoring claims in concrete examples or a clearly bounded argument.

Core principles of high performance work systems in organizations
The most valuable and mercurial asset any enterprise has is the knowledge, insight and intelligence of its employees including the immense amount of tacit and implicit knowledge each has gained over decades of experience. A high performance work system (HPWS) seeks to synchronize the many work structures, systems, processes, implementation decisions and frameworks around a common series of strategic priorities and initiatives (Boxall, 2012). Galvanizing together the many components of a HPWS are the Human Resource Management (HRM) systems, both manual and automated, in addition to the most critical areas of governance that serve as a stabilizing force in organizational cultures (Wood, de Menezes, 2011). Making these many components stay synchronized and focused on a series of strategic objectives is difficult, and made even more challenging when industry and market turbulence is introduced (Preuss, 2003). An HPWS must be agile enough then to react to the turbulence in economic terms yet stable enough to provide a foundation for cross-cultural growth and profitable operations of an enterprise (Mittal, 2011). Any architectural framework then for an HPWS must have elements necessary to ensure a very high degree of agility and shared value creation from the standpoint of collaboration and communication (Boxall, 2012). It must also be designed to enable a very high degree of shared information and knowledge development, as the best-performing HPWS systems are actually knowledge-sharing ecosystems (Hartog, Verburg, 2004). With all of these aspects of an HPWS needing to stay in synchronization as the people, processes, systems, external competitive environment and internal culture of a company change, anchoring these systems in core principles is critical to their stability, scalability and long-term value in any enterprise (Varma, Beatty, Schneier, Ulrich, 1999). It is the intent of this paper to analyze the fundamental principles that have proven invaluable in keeping HPWS agile in turbulent times. These for principles include shared information, knowledge development, performance-reward linkage, and egalitarianism (Varma, Beatty, Schneier, Ulrich, 1999).

Security measures for protecting guests and assets at O'Dell Gallery
The success of an art exhibition is critical to the relative success of the hosting gallery and to that gallery's respective economy. As such, it is imperative that such businesses employ top-tier security measures to ensure the protection of the artwork that exists within these exhibitions, as well as to ensure the protection of the visitors and patrons that spend time in the gallery during said exhibitions. While both guest security and asset security are necessary to the successful runs of each exhibition, the intricacies of each type of security are vastly different and require a distinct set of priorities and measures.

Baderman Island Visitors Center roof replacement analysis
The replacement of the Convention Center roof is a critical decision in the long-term lifecycle of that asset. The preventative maintenance aspects of this decision and the selection fo Composite Tiles will significantly reduce TCO while also also causing the minimum amount of disruption to the Convention Center's availability. Tiles are also the best approach to minimizing reactive maintenance, which would have been the case with asphalt shingles for example. Tiles will also stay consistent with the aesthetics and overall appearance of the property making it more marketable in the years ahead. All of these factors need to be taken into account in choosing a preventative and predictive maintenance strategy over the long-term for the roof replacement.
