What is Treatment?

Treatment is a foundational concept in medicine and health sciences, examined across courses in clinical medicine, pharmacology, psychiatry, public health, ethics, and social work. It sits at the intersection of biological understanding and human care, requiring students to engage not only with how conditions are identified and managed but also with the values and systems that shape those decisions. The topic spans a wide range of conditions — from neurological disorders such as bipolar disorder and multiple sclerosis to concerns in orthodontics, addiction, and neonatal care — making it relevant across nearly every medical subdiscipline. Its academic interest lies in the tension between evidence-based practice and the ethical, legal, and social dimensions that influence how patients receive care.

Student papers on this topic approach treatment from several distinct angles. Ethical analyses examine questions such as religious refusal of medical treatment, the treatment of prisoners, and decision-making for impaired infants. Historical and comparative approaches appear in work covering the treatment of German POWs by Americans during World War II. Clinical and scientific papers focus on drug-receptor interactions, symptom management, diagnosis, and the effectiveness of non-traditional therapies. Policy and systems perspectives surface in discussions of emergency response technologies and the role of social workers in addiction treatment.

A strong essay on treatment needs a clearly bounded thesis — specifying the condition, population, and evaluative lens rather than treating the subject broadly. Evidence drawn from clinical case studies, peer-reviewed journals, and documented patient outcomes carries the most weight. The most common pitfall is conflating different types of treatment without establishing clear criteria for comparison, which weakens analytical focus and makes it difficult to draw meaningful conclusions.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and independent cinema
Major motion pictures have always been about giving the largest possible audience what they want. However, there have always been a few innovators, who make their movies via low budget production methods, that have been able to shift the reality of the big studios. "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is a movie that helped change the way people viewed movies. There was an ambiguity of protagonist/antagonist roles, and an edgy situation starkly told. This essay gives a critical look at the film and a personal perspective.

Lost medical records and patient safety in healthcare systems
Medical Safety Issue: Lost Medical Record The security of medical records is a daily issue with significant impacts on the privacy, security and treatment of patients. Consequently, providers struggle to maintain the security, privacy and integrity of medical records, not only because those practices are mandated by Federal statutes but also because high quality patient care demands it. Unfortunately, as providers struggle to comply with Federal regulations and the medical profession's commitment to patient privacy, security and care, serious problems have been detected in existing electronic medical records systems. First, there are major potential security problems. Secondly, electronic medical records are often kept by third party computer servers and the third parties do not have the same HIPAA privacy restrictions that apply to health care providers. Third, many EMR systems are "local," being tailored for a specific health care provider in a specific area of the country. Fourth, there is a lack of standardization of electronic medical records across the country. Experts have suggested 5 steps that should be taken to ensure security, privacy, universality and standardization of electronic medical records systems, per HIPAA and the HITECH Act. First, the health care provider must secure all Protected Health Information (PHI) "in motion." Secondly, the health care provider must ensure the security of PHI "at rest." Third, the electronic medical records system must detect and report breaches in the system. Fourth, the electronic medical system must ensure that business associates are in compliance with HIPAA and the HITECH Act. Finally, the electronic medical records plan should create a core competence for the exchange of information. By employing an electronic medical records system with these safeguards, the nurse practitioner's office can fully comply with HIPAA and the HITECH Act and also ensure against the irretrievable loss of valuable medical information.
