Question 76.

Design the study, including determining numbers needed for statistical significance, and choose participants.

Offer a low carbohydrate diet to one study group, and a normal (average carbohydrate diet) to another group.

Scientific research will continue to play a crucial role in the social sciences in the next five years. As research funding becomes increasingly competitive, well-designed, scientifically sound experiments will become even more important. Good methodology must continue to be applied. If researchers get sloppy in their data collection or results reporting they risk several negative outcomes. First, they risk losing their jobs and grant money due to a poor reputation and poor results. Second, they risk damaging the reputation of their field of study.

Teach to the Test As William Hatfield presciently warned in 1916, when the ultra-efficiency of industrialization first begin threatening the independence of educators to craft curricula, "an education that focuses on memorising information to ensure reaching a single benchmark is an inadequate measure of success" because while "twelve years of school life has made [students] adept at memorizing & #8230; many of them are novices in thinking" (Mills, 2008). Real Test for Any Proposed Speech Code or Policy" by Alan Dershowitz, the author explains his position on the dangers of censorship, even against the most egregious of speakers. At Harvard University, two people were invited to give speeches at the university and were paid honorariums for their presence. Tom Paulin's speech to the students and faculty included angry diatribes against Jewish people and even states that Jewish people

(Schmitz 1991) When tests are administered to young children that take extended periods of time to complete, such as those which take six to eight hours with only short bathroom breaks, the child's naturally shorter attention span may affect performance on the tests. Many test makers

Gerald Firth makes a convincing argument for the creation of national standards for the profession of school supervisor. Firth believes that the current state-based standards are inadequate because they are determined by elected boards of mostly lay people, who often lack expertise in education and are often motivated by partisan politics. Current local standards defining the role of and requirements for becoming a school supervisor are thus arbitrary and can vary

Still, the significance of his work for the entire academic community can be gathered from Barlow's uncertainties. Barlow writes that he has searched the literature for an effective way of incorporating both the skills required for students to be good writers and teaching the test. Still he found that "they assume a greater control of the academic environment external to the particular classroom than I, as a part-time teacher,
