When you refute a point, you want to have a logical argument to use. In other words, if someone argues that animal testing is not abuse because animals don't feel pain, you would refute that point by citing studies that show that animals do feel pain. Simply saying a person is wrong is not enough to refute a point that has been cited properly. Neither is personal opinion or experience. To be acceptable in an academic setting, factual proof is required.
