For this type of art, the most important thing is the concept that the author is trying to show; this is the theme or message within the art which may not be easily identifiable by people looking at it. Some people who look at this kind of art do not understand it and do not think it is real art. These people do not understand how much work goes into these kinds of art. They might look improvised and unpolished, but in reality, the artists think about the work beforehand and plan out each part of it before they even start making it. LeWitt even says that the actual making of the art is an afterthought because the artist already knows what he or she is going to do because they have already worked so hard on them.

When making conceptual art, LeWitt says that the artist does not have to be complicated in what they make and instead if they make it simple then it is actually better because a more complicated piece will be less able for people to understand or interpret what is being expressed. However, that does not mean it has to be logical; it does not have to expressly show what it is meant to represent and can be interpretive. It is also important to know that you are meant to understand this art not just based on what you see. That would be perception but this is about conception and so you have to experience the art in ways besides only looking at it. According to the article, it does not even really matter if the person looking at the art understands the piece of work at all, or if they understand it differently from what the artist originally intended that they understand. When a piece of art is finished and displayed, then it is not really theirs anymore. Since the people look at it and interpret it, in a way they also become artists because they add another layer of understanding or meaning to what the artists have already but into them.

When making a piece of conceptual art, the artist has to consider many things and plan them all out before they start working on it. For example, the artist has to think about the size of the piece and how that relates to the message that they want to relate. Like if a piece is too big then that will be impressive itself and that could make the message harder to see or if they piece is too small then maybe the artist is saying that their piece is not very important. Something that you would not even really think makes a big difference which is the size actually makes a really big difference. Also, they have to consider their materials and the way in which they will represent that theme; like they have to determine if they want to make the piece two-dimensional or three-dimensional. The amount of space that a piece of conceptual art takes up is also important and the author here says to also take into account the space between the specific objects within a work of art because even space which is actually nothing can have a meaning in art.
