Dance Form and Technique

The tango is a very intimate dance. It is an intimate expression between two dancers, and thus can be incredibly powerful in terms of its form. It centers on two individuals dancing extremely close together as they move across the dance floor. The couple is constantly close to one another, despite several dramatic separations that are often answered by an intense reunion. There are a variety of tango styles, but the tango salon is often what is most recognizable to those who would otherwise be unfamiliar with the style. I have the most experience in the Argentinean style of the dance. This features dramatic and exaggerated movements of the feet, while the partners remained interlocked with each other's arms. The male and female partner hold hands as they move their feet dramatically across the floor. The female partner also takes long, dramatic dips and pauses, as well as spinning away from her partner, only to be holding his hand and thus spin back. The feet movements of the dance are the primary focus of the movement. The feet move back and forth, as well as making dramatic sweeps across the dance floor. Additionally, the female partner is often swirled around, dipped, and lifted into the air. Now this only works with dancers who have a lot of experience, but provides a sense of drama and intensity to the form of those who can pull it off. The style of dance actually originates from a musical form. Thus, the structure of the tango stems from a style of music that is specifically unique to the tango style of dance. The dance is set to a ballroom style symphony with a Spanish style flare. It is said to have originated from South American nations, like Argentina. Thus, the music highlights stringed instruments, like the violin and the bass, to correspond with the dramatic movements being made by the dancers themselves.

The technique of the tango is extremely intricate and difficult to learn. It is a long dance, with intricate movements by both partners. Personally, I have yet to master the dance, but have experience trying with my partner. In order to get to the mastery level I am currently at, I had to tae several classes. The first introduction class for the dance was a disaster. Me and my partner stumbled all over each other, and barely got the first move of the dance down. Still nowhere near the final technical performance, I feel that I am still progressing nicely, and learn several new steps of the dance each new class I attend. I have always grown up with the notion for dance being associated with more ball room style tempos. However, the South American rhythms were very easy to adapt to, and entertaining to practice too. Additionally, there has always been an allure surrounding the dance that has made it appealing to want to learn on a more advanced scale.
