Detective O'Reilly had not seen anything like it in his 30 years on the Lexington, Kentucky police force, and he had seen a lot. There were no bodies. There was no sign of forced entry. There was not one thing out of place in the country home of the Daniels family -- Luke 34, his wife Mary 32, son Ricky 15, and daughter Kate 12. They were gone... missing for eight days.
Relatives were contacted, as were friends, acquaintances, neighbors, their church and everyone else O'Reilly could think of. No note of explanation.
They just disappeared. There were vague reports of strange sightings in that night sky, but no one could connect them with anything in Lexington.
The only clue was some wet spots on the floor when the police first broke in that first day. Well, not just wet spots because they were more slimy and slick than anything else. When O'Reilly felt them with his hand, he pulled back quickly. My gosh, they're warm, he thought and had one of the other detectives touch them too. Molly, his partner, said the same thing.
And there was the noise -- no, the sound, or vibration or something -- whatever it was. That first day they heard a very faint humming noise -- almost human -- but not. Like a fan noise? Or a child humming to themselves? Weird, strange, and a little frightening. And he had heard it since, every so often as he explored the home top to bottom and found...nothing.
It was his last day on earth that Detective O'Reilly went back to the house for another look.
He walked in the door and was immediately blasted with the loudest sound he had ever heard...he saw the slick, slimy, wet spots just before the tentacles encircled his body, squeezing tightly. When police came to investigate, all they found was some wet spots on the floor. And then there was that humming noise that kept getting louder and louder....
