Pre-Interview Questions
Tell me about your work experience as it relates to this position?
In my most recent role at HNTB Corporation, I’ve maintained a number of responsibilities that align closely with the Project Accountant role at WSP. I've performed detailed financial analyses, focusing on key performance indicators like budget adherence, earnings variances, and cash flow. One of my notable achievements was developing a plan to resolve Delinquent Billing & AR balances on four troubled projects, which led to cash collections of 1.5 million dollars. I am experienced in identifying financial risks and opportunities, so as to ensure the project's overall financial health.
Before HNTB, I worked at Jacobs Engineering Group, where I gained hands-on experience with Oracle, the ERP system that WSP also utilizes. At Jacobs, I was responsible for the accounting activities of projects that had a combined Year-To-Date revenue of over $10 million. I also managed all construction project accounting for contract budgets that were valued at $115 million. My role required me to coordinate closely with project-related personnel on various aspects like project setup, performance status, and client invoicing requirements. I prepared, distributed, and tracked monthly invoice submissions for a diverse set of clients, including government agencies and private companies. This experience has given me a comprehensive understanding of the accounting needs and challenges in large-scale projects.
Additionally, my earlier experience as a Restaurant Manager at Greek Town Gyros Restaurant provided me with a strong foundation in customer relations, inventory control, and basic accounting, which have been invaluable in my subsequent roles.
Given the alignment between my professional experience and the job duties listed for the Project Accountant role at WSP, I believe I am well-suited to contribute effectively to your team. My experience with Oracle and my proven track record in financial analysis and project coordination make me a strong candidate for this position.
Where do you feel that your expertise is the strongest?
My expertise is strongest in the areas of financial analysis and project coordination. I am proficient in various ERP systems. I had direct experience with Oracle. So, I possess the skills and understanding one would need to quickly adapt to your existing systems. Currently, at HNTB, we use Microsoft Dynamics AX, which, while functional, is somewhat archaic compared to Oracle. My personal preference is for Oracle.
In my current role at HNTB Corporation, I also conduct detailed reviews of consultant agreements, focusing on compensation clauses, and identifying opportunities for revenue enhancements. This work has both helped us to improve the profitability of projects and also streamline the billing process. My skills in data analysis are backed by my proficiency in advanced MS Excel features, such as PivotTables and VLOOKUP, which I used to dissect large datasets and make data-driven decisions.
On top of this, my interpersonal skills are invaluable in my ability to collaborate effectively with Project Managers and other stakeholders. For instance, I played a key role in developing and implementing new company procedures to resolve future billing problems. This required a deep understanding of the project lifecycle and the ability to communicate complex financial data in an understandable manner. The combination of my analytical skills and my ability to work in a team-oriented environment has been a cornerstone in my success and in facilitating the financial success of the projects I've managed.
What are your career goals over the next few years?
In the immediate future, my focus is on mastering new skills and technologies that are becoming increasingly important in the field of project accounting. I'm particularly interested in using automation tools and data analytics software that can help in making financial processes more efficient and accurate. I see these skills as not just a way to improve my own productivity, but as a means to contribute more strategically to the organization's goals.
Long-term, I aspire to grow into a leadership role within the accounting department. I envision myself contributing to strategic decision-making processes, particularly in areas related to financial planning and risk assessment. I'm also passionate about mentorship and look forward to the opportunity to guide and develop the next generation of accountants. I see myself as a manager and as a leader who can drive change and innovation within the organization.
