The teams are organized to build the tunnels, forge documents, make civilian clothing, acquire contraband goods and prevent the guards from discovering the work of the escape. The POWs commence and continue work on three tunnels simultaneously. On the night of the escape, seventy-six prisoners get out of the camp. Most are killed (fifty were murdered outright by the Gestapo) or captured with only a handful making it out to freedom. Only three make it to safety in Sweden and Spain ("Allmovie.com").

They have been nonetheless influenced by the genre such as Papillon that Steve McQueen himself played in ten years later in 1973 ("Tcm.com"). Rarely has such a one to one connection between two different films been made upon such similar topics that has been made since the Great Escape.
Conclusion
Truly, few other films have had such long-lasting influences on all levels upon films, music and pop-culture than the Great Escape. Despite being almost fifty years old, these influences appear to be going stronger than ever and will continue to have a long-lasting influence for many years to come.
