Historical Evidence in Furniture History

The historical approach to examining furniture is strictly rooted in examining primary documents as they were written in the heyday of their particular styles. These documents help paint a much more tangible and approachable study of the styles of specific periods. The Cabinet Maker's and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, written by Thomas Sheraton, is now different.

As a prominent furniture designer of the late eighteenth century, Sheraton was a premier voice in terms of determining the structures and standards of style. Sheraton himself dominated the English furniture market, setting the standard of style in most of the affluent homes and estates in England and all throughout Europe. Thus, this work helps provide primary evidence for the creation of particular furniture styles, as well as detailed information on how those styles were created. It is a brave endeavor to share one's secrets with the world, and so it is not only commendable for Sheraton to do so, but also his work must be seen as the influential masterpiece it was. Although not full of moving prose, Sheraton's work helped inspire and guide furniture designers and crafters to a new level of excellence.

The Cabinet Maker's and Upholsterer's Drawing Book was created to show off the latest styles, as well as showcase the work of other great furniture makers of Sheraton's day. The work itself is actually compromised of a multitude of different inputs. More than six hundred individual cabinet makers were included in the publication and asked to provide detailed designs, techniques, and practices for cabinet making within the popular styles of the day. It breaks down the specifics of creating freezes, arches, and patterns with a mixture of different shapes and sizes. Each different style is explored through thorough instructions for its replication along with a detailed description of necessary tools and common approaches to the style of design designated through Sheraton's own personal preferences for English furniture styles. It is a thorough collection of how to approach very different styles in numerous contexts. With wood as its primary medium, the artwork of Sheraton was allowed to live on through its massive reproduction as a result of the detailed instructions of this work. Although this collaborated effort allowed other designers and cabinet makers to copy and reproduce these designs, it also allowed for Sheraton's visionary designs and conceptions of how beautiful furniture should look. It set a standard in terms of fashionable design, while also allowing many of the more normal day-to-day consumers to enjoy high furniture fashion as well.

Not long after its publication, the work became a huge hit, and served to influence a great many cabinet makers across England and the rest of the Western world. The designs went on to inspire a plethora of private makers to create pieces within the context of a generalized Sheraton style. Thus, it was extremely influential in the method and design styles of creating detailed and stunning wood pieces. It can still be used to provide a realistic interpretation of the construction of such beautiful and profound furniture styles of earlier generations.
