Increasing the level of happiness in people is all about breaking bad habits and starting new ones. This paper will show exactly how to do that by taking just a few short steps in the right direction.
Bad habits are easily formed because they are the path of least resistance. As Achor notes, “passive leisure” is not as rewarding as “active leisure” but we prefer the former because it is initially easier to do. By making it harder to do, and making active leisure easier to do, we can actually be happier: “Whether people are trying to change habits at work or at home, the key is to reduce choices by making a few simple rules” (Achor).
The best way to be happier is thus to make it easier for ourselves to do the things that we think of as hard. If there are obstacles in the way, one should remove them. Achor states that “one way to become active is to make the desired behavior the easiest activity to do.” In other words, throw out the obstacles that get in the way of the desired activity.
For example, if one knows he should exercise but instead ends up watching TV all day, one trick is to remove the TV and in its place put a treadmill and a radio. One will begin walking more and listening to the radio.
In conclusion, the trick to being happy is all about forming good habits. And the trick to forming good habits is all about making them easier to develop. Bad habits are developed because they are easy to develop. Good habits can seem tough to develop at first, so be mindful about your steps and take the initiative to get rid of obstacles to getting started forming those good habits.
