Nurse’s Role

Prompt 1: Nurse's Role in Promoting Social Justice and Health Equity

Part of the nurse’s role in providing quality care is to also assist in the promotion of social justice and health equity, which can impact the social determinants of health. To promote social justice and health equity, nurses can serve as advocates for patients at both the level of policy and practice. Nurse advocates can work to endorse equitable access to healthcare regardless of a patient's background, economic status, or geographic location. They can work towards eliminating disparities in healthcare by providing culturally competent care, educating communities on health practices, and participating in policy development.

Culturally competent care involves understanding and respecting patients' cultural beliefs, values, and practices. Nurses educate themselves on the cultural backgrounds of their patients to provide care that is sensitive to their needs. This approach helps build trust between nurses and patients, ensuring that treatment plans are understood and followed.

Nurses also have a part to play in addressing the social determinants of health, such as housing, education, and employment, which can significantly impact health outcomes. They can play an educational role by informing communities about preventive health measures and healthy lifestyle choices. And nurses can work with local, state, and federal governments to develop, implement, and evaluate policies that aim to improve healthcare access and quality for all.

Prompt 2: Overcoming a Challenge Through Strategy

A significant challenge I faced was managing time effectively while balancing academic, work, and personal responsibilities during the pandemic. The nature of multitasking at a time when the world seemed on the brink of disaster caused me a good deal of personal, academic, and professional stress. However, to overcome this, I implemented several strategies: First, I focused on self-care—which is ultra-important in a nurse’s life if the nurse is going to be any good to anyone. The nurse has to take the time to recharge, and this can often be as simple as engaging in a few mindfulness exercises. Mindfulness training actually helped me to focus and see more clearly the little things I could do to cope with the stress during the pandemic. I began using a digital planner to organize tasks by priority, giving myself realistic deadlines and breaking larger tasks into smaller, manageable actions. Second, I adopted the Pomodoro technique, and dedicated focused periods to study with short breaks in between to enhance concentration and efficiency. Lastly, I learned to delegate and say no to additional responsibilities that could overextend my capacity. These strategies reduced my stress levels, improved my time management skills and helped to boost my academic performance.
