Parental Lessons: Top Three

Parenting is widely regarded as one of the most challenging jobs that a person can potentially take on. During the course of raising and loving a child into a balanced and healthy individual, there will be numerous obstacles and uncertainties that a parent needs to be able to address with great wisdom and courage. If I had to select the three main things that I would want to teach my child they would be self-love, risk-taking, and working hard.

Self-love is such an important tool and is something that will help my child weather so many of the storms of life. There are so many external forces that tell people they are unworthy of love, care and attention: we aren’t attractive enough, smart enough, thin enough, strong enough, and we don’t make enough money—or so the world tells us. There will never be a shortage of external forces telling you you’re not good enough. But self-love will help my child recover more readily from adversity, and there will always be adversity in life.

Risk-taking I believe is essential to creating success in life and meeting one’s complete potential. So many people don’t meet the bulk of the potential of all things that they can achieve in life because very often they are afraid to take bigger risks. However, I believe that bigger risks can create bigger rewards for people, in the most meaningful ways. This is something that I hope I can instill my child with: a sense of fearlessness regarding risk-taking.

I truly believe in the transformative power of hard work. When people can work hard and focus on a goal, they can achieve enormously fantastic things. Hard work is essential in developing one’s potential and being able to develop one’s talent to the fullest.

In conclusion, if I could only teach my child three things, they would self-love, risk-taking and hard work. Self-love will give them a strong grounding sense of self and value to protect them from life’s adversities. Risk taking and hard work will ensure they develop their talents and potential to the highest level of ability.
