Purpose Statement

The purpose of this qualitative study (systematic review) is to examine the prevalence and effects of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) among American women, with a focus on identifying risk factors, available resources, and strategies for prevention as well as coping so as to maintain quality of life. This research will utilize a systematic review methodology to include qualitative studies published from 2018-2022, including participants 65+ years of age, and focusing on AD.

The sampling frame for this study will be determined by inclusion and exclusion criteria, such as qualitative research, published 2018-2022, including participants 65+, focused on AD, and excluding quantitative studies, studies of dementia that do not address AD, or studies that focus on biological or medical aspects of AD. The sample size will be to target 50 studies that fit the inclusion criteria with a goal being to include at least 12 for the purpose of the review. The sampling method will include using keywords in the online databases where literature on the topic are likely to be stored, including Google Scholar but not being limited to that platform search engine.

Data collection methods will involve online database search engines such as PubMED, Medline, Cochrane Library, et al., and data analysis will utilize appropriate software that can assist in thematic analysis, such as Atlas, QDA, or Taguette.

The results of this study will inform existing theories and provide insight into the impact of AD among American women, as well as mitigation strategies that could be implemented to reduce the risk of onset or coping strategies that could help with sustaining quality of life. It may also give insight into to relevant constructs and variables related to the prevalence and effects of AD for American women.
