Shepardize What does "Shepardizing" mean ?

Shepardizing is the act of consulting Shepard's citations to see if a legal case has been overturned, affirmed, corroborated, questioned, or cited by later cases. Shepard's citations themselves are a list of all the authorities citing a particular statute, case, commentator, or legal authority.

what is the process of Shepardizing a case using the print version of Shepard's?

Firstly, you select the right citation selecting citator that corresponds to the reporter series (for instance if you are investigating the McNeil case and you are using the book Federal Reporter, you would shepardize the McNeil decision in Shepard's Federal Citations. Your Shepard supplement of citations should be the most recent and complete edition. Multi-volume sets of Shepard's citations are divided into volumes that contain either cases or statutes as cited references. Book spines show the reporter volumes that are included. A cursory check of the spines tells you the books that you need for your citation.

The table of contents and preface explains the citator's features and coverage. To find a citation, look for the right division (divisions are listed in the table of contents); look for the reporter's volume name that appears on the tope of the page in boxes, there you will also find the page number, case name, and decision date. There are differences between the two. You turn to state reporters for (a) state insturctions, (b) court rules, and (c) for citing references from decisions of that state. These are at least 3 reasons why you would turn to state reporters as well as regional reporters. Regional reporters do not include statute and non-case legal authorities as their citators. However, they are used because they contain decisions from other states.
