Proposed Project Summary

The 2023 STEAM summer camp will be a great opportunity for students to explore the arts and sciences through fun and engaging activities. The camp will provide a supportive and nurturing environment for students to develop their creativity and critical thinking skills. In addition, the camp will give students the opportunity to meet other like-minded individuals and make new friends. The camp will be held from June 12th – August 4th, and will be open to students ages 5-14.

Programs/Activities

Our STEAM summer camp will provide kids with a chance to explore the world of science, technology, engineering, art, and math through a variety of hands-on activities. For example, animal habitat dioramas can teach kids about the different needs of different animals, while also giving them a chance to be creative in designing their own habitats. Making ice cream is a great way to explore the science of matter, while building and playing musical instruments can help kids learn about the physics of sound and vibrations. And what could be more fun than launching your own rocket bottle? Through these and other engaging activities, a STEAM summer camp can provide kids with a memorable and educational experience.

When/Where

The STEAM-focused summer camp will provide an even more enriching experience by exposing campers to science, technology, engineering, art, and math concepts. Each day at STEAM camp will include a variety of activities such as designing and building structures out of recycled materials, coding robots to complete missions, conducting experiments to test hypotheses, or creating artworks inspired by the natural world. These activities will not only be fun and engaging for campers, but will also help them develop important critical thinking and problem-solving skills. At the end of the week, campers will share what they have learned with their parents and guardians during a closing ceremony or showcase. This would be a great way for them to reflect on their experience and show off their new STEAM knowledge and skills.

Participation

At our STEAM summer camp, we acknowledge the importance of STEM education and competition. Robotics, coding, and game creation competitions are held in collaboration with other camps in the area. This allows for better connection between participants and a more well-rounded experience. Different aspects of each activity are learned through this process, solidifying concepts for the future. The partnerships created through these competitions also set the stage for futurity planning for future camps. Classrooms are not always able to provide such opportunities, which is why our camp is so important. It allows for creativity, collaboration, and higher level thinking to be emphasized in a fun environment outside of the school year!

Who

The STEAM summer camp will have programs and activities that focus on nurturing the talents of minority students from inner-city and low socioeconomic backgrounds. The camp will have a mentorship component in which older students work with younger ones on projects related to science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. The projects will be designed to introduce the students to new fields of study and to help them build confidence in their abilities. In addition, the camp will offer enrichment activities such as field trips to museums and universities, guest lectures by STEAM professionals, and college preparation workshops. By providing programs and activities that focus on the interests and needs of minority students, a STEAM summer camp can help to close the achievement gap and prepare these students for success in college and beyond.

Cost

The cost of the program should not be a barrier to participation. The eight-week cost per child will not exceed $430. The program will also be structured so that it is engaging and engaging for children of all ages. A STEAM summer camp can provide an excellent way for children to explore their interests in a fun and enriching environment. The budget will include, shelter, meals, activities, materials, and t-shirt.

Key Personnel

STEAM camp counselors will be knowledgeable about the subject matter, and they will also be able to engage campers in hands-on activities. Additionally, camp directors will have a background in education or STEAM-related fields, and they will be able to develop and implement an age-appropriate curriculum. With the right key personnel in place, the STEAM summer camp can provide a transformative experience for minority students from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

Benefits/Why Fund

The STEAM summer camp will have a profound benefit on students’ academic. This camp will provide opportunities for students to get ahead in areas that they may be lacking and also allow them to explore potential careers. Often times, these students are the first in their family to attend college and the camps can remove some of the financial stressors associated with college preparation. The campers are also able to form relationships with professionals who can act as mentors and provide guidance both during and after the camp experience. Overall, the STEAM summer camp will be a transformative experience for minority students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, opening up new worlds of possibilities both academically and professionally.

Track Record

The South Temple Empowerment project established its Summer Science/Arts program in 2008 in order to provide a safe learning environment for kids from low-income families. The goal of the program is to help develop and build scientific experiences, critical thinking skills, and fine art skills. Our organization has been providing service to the community through our loving and dedicated staff who have a combined total of 50 years in education. We are STEAM focused in every way with committed staff, who are trained in helping students obtain skills and life lessons that will open new opportunities for them.

Over the eleven years, students have participated in on-site learning discovery experiences as well as field trips to places like Zoo Miami, Miami Seaquarium, Jungle Island, Miami Children\\\'s Museum, and Frost Museum.

Last year was successful--all students met their performance goals!

Priority Attention

The organization will visit local schools, churches, and post flyers at grocery stores to share information about the summer camp science program. An early open house will be held to show parents what a day at camp would be like. Transportation will be provided for students that are underserved. We will also collaborate with local churches to inform parents about our summer camp science program. STEAM items will always be the center and focus, as students are guided through activities with robotics, arts, building, and critical thinking processes that will engage and enlighten them, and ready them for the future.

Expanded Program Offerings

As a South Temple Empowerment Project, we are committed to making sure that every child has access and opportunity to grow in the sciences, arts, mathematics field, and more. To expand the 2021 Summer STEAM Camp program by offering discounts for multiple siblings who wish attend our camp; if more than half of participants need extended hours (to stay longer), all fees will be waived in order accommodate working families--and there\\\'s no wait list either! Scholarship Determination

STEP is excited to offer 40 full scholarships for economically disadvantaged students. We will determine eligibility based on a student\\\'s ability and need, then they\\\'ll be put onto our official roster according first-come/first served basis who qualify as Free Or Reductions lunch during last year’s school year! The director has committed collaboration with Guidance Counselor from surrounding schools; these counselors recommend applicants by informing parents about camp opportunities - forwarding contact information alongside congratulations messages in mailboxes once again this fall season. Families will receive an official phone call or letter of congratulation as a recipient of the scholarship and inviting them to attend parent orientation.

Letters of Agreement

Miami-Dade County Public Schools is excited to announce the partnership with STEP Center, who will provide summer lunches for children under 18 years old during June until August. We\\\'ll offer campers a hot nutritional breakfast and lunch at no charge! This year our Science Camps are focused on painting as taught by artist Pedro Jermaine complete instructions can be found here In addition we have 10+ internship opportunities available where teens currently enrolled in high school may work while getting paid funded by Miami Dade County taxpayers. STEAM materials to be utilized during sessions will be provided by the camp. During the showcase, campers will be able to display art work at this time.
