Understanding Culture with International Students

Culture is a difficult thing to define because it encompasses so many different aspects of human life. When thinking about the most important cultural things in my country, three key themes come to mind: diversity, history, and family. First, I would point out that my country is a very diverse country, with people from all over the world coming together to create one national culture. This diversity is evident in our food, music, and art. Second, our country has a rich history that is reflected in our laws, customs, and architecture, which influences come from all over the world. Third, I would say that family is very important part of what makes different things culturally important to people. But for the most part I would try to explain that people value close relationships with parents, siblings, peers, and children. These are just a few examples of the things that help to explain the most important cultural things in my country. Aside from them I would say to look at the different religions of the country, the different arts, and the ways that people express themselves. People love sports, too, like football, and this is also an important cultural thing (Black, 2021).

When travelling to a new country as a student, there are a number of precautions that you can take in order to help you understand the country better (Martiniello, 2022). Firstly, it is important to research the country in advance and learn about its history, culture and customs. This will give you a better understanding of the people and their way of life. Secondly, it is advisable to make contact with local people in advance of your trip, either through social media or by joining a relevant student group. This will allow you to ask questions and get first-hand advice about what to expect. Finally, it is important to be respectful of local customs and traditions when you are in the country. This includes things like dress code, food etiquette and religious beliefs. By taking these precautions, you will help ensure that your trip is both enjoyable and educational.

I never considered myself a particularly patriotic person: patriotism always struck me as more of a concept than something that I felt personally. But that all changed when I started traveling. Whenever I would land in a new country, I would be bombarded with new sights, sounds, and smells. I was constantly surrounded by new people and new experiences. But in the midst of all this newness, I found myself thinking more and more about home. I missed the familiar taste of my mother’s cooking and the sound of my father’s voice. I even started to appreciate small things, like being able to read street signs and understand the news on television. Traveling made me realize how much I took for granted about my life at home. And it also made me appreciate how lucky I am to live in such a diverse and interesting country. Now, whenever I see the flag or hear the national anthem, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride. Because for me, patriotism isn’t just about loving your country; it’s also about understanding and appreciating your own place in it and its history.

As a shy student at my school, I often felt like a small fish in a big pond. There were so many students and so much going on that it was easy to feel lost in the crowd. So, when a foreign exchange student from Japan named Akira joined our class, I was eager to connect with him. Akira quickly became known for his friendly nature and helpful demeanor. He was always willing to lend a hand, whether it was carrying heavy books or explaining a difficult concept. In addition, Akira helped to create a more international atmosphere in our class. He would often share stories about his culture and holidays, and he even taught us how to make origami cranes. Through Akira, I felt more connected to my classmates and the world beyond my campus. His contribution to our student life was one that I will always value because it really transcended our space and helped us to look beyond ourselves to a wider world and to nobler and higher principles. Whereas before I had found myself thinking mainly about me in my narrow space of existence, after getting to know Akira I truly began to appreciate that there was a larger world all around me and that I was not the center of it but could benefit greatly from engaging with it.

When I first arrived at university, I was nervous about making friends. I was worried that I wouldn't have anything in common with the other students. However, I quickly realized that there were plenty of other students in the same boat as me. I started to reach out to people, and before long, I had made a group of friends from all over the world. I reached out by connecting with people on campus, going to events, and just looking to be open to talking to anyone. I was really interested in learning more about other cultures so would gravitate to international students and multicultural events. Over time I got to know a great many people this way. We would spend our evenings chatting and getting to know each other’s cultures. It was a great way to learn about different countries and make some great friends. One of my favorite times to recall is when we all went out for dinner to celebrate Chinese New Year. It was a great evening filled with food, laughter, and cultural exchange. I’m grateful to have made such wonderful friends during my time at university.

As a college student, you have the unique opportunity to build global networks for your start-up while still in school. With a little planning and effort, you can make connections that will help you launch your business on a global scale. Here are a few tips for how to get started:
