Dear Mrs. Livingstone:

Thank you for your letter regarding the duplication of union newspapers to you and your husband. As you know, we all do whatever we can to keep the costs for the union as low as possible. As editor of the newspaper, I continually look for ways to either reduce or maintain costs. With the price of paper and printing always on the rise, this is not easy always easy.

Sometimes what appears to be a more costly approach may, in fact, be the most efficient way to proceed. Two years ago, I investigated what it would take to eliminate these duplicate copies for couples who both...

...

Ironically, I found that the options for this would not be beneficial for the bottom line.
High-tech purge programs that eliminate duplication are too expensive. Also, due to the large number of union members, it would cost more to go through the list manually and make necessary changes. Printing costs would not be reduced either, because of the large run.

A understand your concerns and appreciate your letter. Next time you receive two issues, please bring one along with you to an appointment at the dentist's, doctor's or hairdresser's, or any other community location. By leaving this extra paper there, you will not only be sharing the duplicate, but spreading the word about the state workers and union.

Thank you again for your letter. Please contact me again if you have another suggestion.
