The significance of cloud computing is growing daily as the concept receives increasing attention in scientific and industrial communities. This trend is driven by the maturity of the concept from a promising business model to one of the most rapidly growing segments of the Information Technology industry. Some of the major benefits that make cloud computing an attractive model include optimization of a business's capital investment, simplicity and speed of operations, and enabling an enterprise to tap into a broader talent pool (Mahmood & Hill, 2011, p. 5). Despite the numerous opportunities cloud computing provides to IT businesses and organizations, it is associated with various challenges for the enterprise. Many of these challenges were initially attributed to the fact that the concept was in its infancy. However, cloud computing has matured from an operational perspective with regard to the delivery of strategic and tactical value (Hill, Hirsch, Lake & Moshiri, 2012, p. 270). Nonetheless, organizations that are unwilling to learn from the hype-cycle history will struggle to reap the benefits and may ultimately have difficulty surviving. In contrast, organizations capable of adapting and reshaping their business models can develop and deliver value in ways that yield competitive advantages.
The deployment of cloud computing in an enterprise infrastructure is accompanied by significant security concerns and challenges. While business organizations have carried out proper planning and attempted to understand emerging risks, vulnerabilities, and threats, cloud computing remains linked with major security concerns. Organizations have experienced — and will continue to experience — various system losses in this cloud computing era because of the inherent risks associated with deploying cloud processes in an enterprise infrastructure. These system losses continue to have considerable effects on organizations' most valuable information and assets (Bisong & Rahman, 2011, p. 30). The inherent risks are partly attributed to the constantly evolving nature of cloud computing. Based on a review of various studies, the top five challenges in cloud computing for the enterprise are: service quality, real benefits or business outcomes, security and privacy, integration, and performance or inadequate responsiveness over the network.
Enterprises cite service quality as one of the major factors for their reluctance to shift business applications to the cloud. They argue that the Service Level Agreements (SLAs) offered by cloud providers are currently insufficient to guarantee the requirements for running production applications. These agreements are inadequate with respect to scalability, availability, and performance. While enterprises may receive compensation for service downtime, existing SLAs do not cover business losses. Due to the lack of proper service quality guarantees, enterprises are increasingly reluctant to host their critical business infrastructure in the cloud.

Some of the most significant integration challenges arise when connecting current cloud computing applications with existing data structures and legacy applications within the enterprise.
The fifth and most significant challenge that enterprises face is security and privacy. Data security and privacy rank as the highest concern in the deployment and implementation of cloud computing applications. Because cloud computing represents a relatively new model for computing, there is considerable uncertainty about achieving security at all levels. Security and privacy issues also stem from the fact that cloud computing introduces a new level of risk, as important services are typically outsourced to a third party. Outsourcing makes it difficult for enterprises to maintain data integrity and privacy, demonstrate compliance, and sustain the availability of data and services. Security challenges are associated with risk areas including lack of control, reliance on the public Internet, external data storage, and integration with internal security systems (Hashizume, Rosado, Fernandez-Medina & Fernandez, 2013).
