It is a hybrid of leading agile and lean methods with guidance on how to make better choices when applying strategies for the situation that you find yourself in. DAD can be summed up as 'pragmatic agile,' giving you the flexibility to adapt your approach for your unique context" (Lines, 2015). This is one of the main reasons that DAD has been gaining so much popularity: it offers users a massive amount of adaptability.
The main role of DAD is that it provides a more fluid and comprehensive approach to the delivery of agile solutions (disciplinedagiledelivery.com). One way it achieves this is by supporting a more robust array of roles through its hybrid method (disciplinedagiledelivery.com). This hybrid approach is one of its major advantages, as it extends the capabilities of Scrum with techniques proven to be effective from methods such as Agile Modeling (AM), Extreme Programming (XP), and Unified Process (UP), among others (disciplinedagiledelivery.com). Another benefit DAD offers is that it is open: it is a non-proprietary, freely accessible methodology that supports a range of delivery lifecycles.
One advantage DAD holds over Scrum is its ability to extend the construction-centered lifecycle from the start of a project all the way through to transferring the solution to its end recipients (disciplinedagiledelivery.com). DAD also centers on lean, continuous delivery and lean startup versions of the lifecycle as a whole (disciplinedagiledelivery.com). Unlike other methods, this framework does not revolve around a single prescribed lifecycle, acknowledging that context is crucial and variety is necessary. This is another key advantage DAD presents: it offers choices rather than prescribed, one-size-fits-all tactics. DAD Roles, Lifecycle Models, and Flexibility
The four lifecycle models that DAD possesses provide a higher level of flexibility in overall project guidance and recommendations for best practices within each type of project (Francino, 2016). To use a construction analogy, DAD offers the general framework for building a cottage, a mansion, a townhouse, or a mobile home by providing guidance on the types of tools and processes one might want to use, rather than the prescriptive blueprint that something like Scrum would offer (Francino, 2016). It is important to note that this level of flexibility is not appreciated by everyone—generally it suits those who already have a solid grasp of agile. For professionals who are new to agile, a method like DAD may not offer sufficient guidance. While SAFe and DAD generally have more complementary qualities than opposing ones, DAD may require organizations to have experienced coaches and consultants on hand who can provide specific guidance (Francino, 2016).
DAD offers both primary and secondary roles, comprising around ten roles in total, whereas Scrum has only three roles (Ambler, 2015). DAD's five primary roles consist of the Stakeholder, Team Member, Team Lead, Product Owner, and Architecture Owner (Ambler, 2016). The primary roles are present regardless of scale, while the secondary roles emerge as a response to scaling. Secondary roles include the Specialist, Domain Expert, Technical Expert, Independent Tester, and Integrator. Thus, DAD has over three times the number of roles found in Scrum, largely as a result of scope. Scrum makes leadership and change management the central aspects of construction, and its role structure reflects that. DAD, by contrast, focuses on the total delivery lifecycle and all factors of solution delivery—particularly the technical factors that Scrum omits—meaning a larger scope requires more roles to fulfill all the resulting needs. For example, because DAD is more comprehensive and includes agile architecture, it designates an Architecture Owner role; Scrum does not address this, so no such role exists within it.
DAD creates an environment where roles are more interchangeable, and team members may take turns performing one another's responsibilities. Some argue this builds a stronger team, as everyone develops familiarity with the jobs and tasks that keep the project moving. SAFe, by comparison, assigns roles to five to ten people who all share responsibility for iterating, developing, and assessing some aspect of the overall solution value.
