Denzel Washington's Star Power: Remember the Titans Analysis

~4 min read 4 sections Arts · Film Analysis
Abstract

This paper examines the qualities that distinguish a Hollywood "star" from a merely working actor, using Denzel Washington and his performance in Remember the Titans (2000) as the central case study. The paper identifies key elements of star power — including physical symmetry, vocal distinctiveness, watchability, and the ability to project both trustworthiness and moral ambiguity — and traces how Washington embodies each of them. It also considers how his broader filmography, from Philadelphia to Training Day, establishes his range and reinforces his appeal, before analyzing how the cinematography of Remember the Titans constructs his on-screen presence as almost mythic.

What makes this paper effective

  • The paper moves logically from a general theory of stardom to a specific case study, grounding abstract claims about "star quality" in concrete examples from Washington's filmography.
  • It uses the concept of "watchability" — including ambiguity, physical presence, and vocal distinctiveness — as a unifying analytical lens applied consistently across multiple films.
  • The observation about Washington's lighting in Remember the Titans demonstrates close textual analysis, showing how cinematographic choices reinforce a star's constructed image.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper demonstrates the use of a conceptual framework — here, the multifactor theory of stardom — applied to a single case study. By first establishing what star power consists of generally, then testing those criteria against a specific actor and film, the writer produces an argument that is both theoretically grounded and evidence-based.

Structure breakdown

The essay opens with a general discussion of what separates stars from other actors, then narrows to Washington's specific qualities. The third section surveys his broader filmography to establish his range, and the final section focuses on Remember the Titans specifically — examining both Washington's role and the film's visual choices. The conclusion is embedded in the final section rather than appearing as a standalone paragraph.

What Makes a Hollywood Star

The factors that make one successful actor a "star" — rather than simply an actor who works frequently — result from a mix of qualities that have been widely discussed by journalists, social scientists, producers, and a range of other experts. While every major star or celebrity is different, upon examination they often share a few qualities in common that greatly contribute to their star power. A baseline quality that nearly every star possesses, for instance, is an aesthetically pleasing, attractive appearance. However, there are many actors and actresses living in Hollywood who are stunning but who have nowhere near a comparable level of fame or success.

A more specific factor in creating a "star" would be more accurately expressed as watchability. Hollywood has demonstrated that nearly every star in the history of cinema has possessed a visual and behavioral quality so engaging that audiences simply do not want to look away. Some experts refer to it as the celebrity je ne sais quoi factor, but it is more than that. Often these stars carry a demeanor that does not reveal everything — a quality that engages the audience even further and makes viewers feel more invested. Humphrey Bogart had such a quality, as did Denzel Washington, Meg Ryan, and Angelina Jolie.

Denzel Washington's Star Qualities

When it comes to Denzel Washington, he definitively possesses that star quality. His face is perfectly symmetrical and highly attractive. His personality is such that audiences are accustomed to seeing him play both heroes and villains, so they are never quite certain whether they can trust him onscreen — something which adds considerably to his general sense of intrigue. This ambiguity makes audiences want to watch him, because they are never sure what they will get.

He also has a very memorable and melodic voice. Most major Hollywood stars have a voice that can be easily identified and is distinctly their own. The film selected for this essay is Remember the Titans, directed by Jerry Bruckheimer in 2000. This film best demonstrates Washington's range as an actor. In it, he is both a good guy and a bad guy. Playing the coach of a football team called the Titans, he must be the antagonizing force in that he gives the team a great deal of tough love in order to push them to become better athletes and win more games. Yet as a good guy, he is the person compelling the team to reach a higher level of excellence by making everyone dig deep and find their own inner strength.
