The restaurant was visited at 8 p.m. on Friday, November 12th, 2010, with a party of two. Giovanni's was situated at a country highway intersection, with its parking lot located across the highway. The front of the restaurant was unremarkable, featuring a few flower boxes filled with dirt and a fern. Walking through the door, however, felt like stepping through a time machine into a 1950s Italian lounge — one half-expected to see Frank Sinatra in his white coat at any moment. The décor was pleasing, warm, and classy.
Reservations were available but not required. We arrived as walk-ins and were greeted promptly and warmly by the hostess, Sophia. Our names were placed on a wait list, and we were invited to sit in a comfortable and elegantly decorated waiting area. The restaurant was fairly busy that evening; three other parties were also waiting to be seated. The staff spoke to one another and to other guests with consistent courtesy and respect.
One notable shortcoming was that the county health department certificate and rating were not prominently displayed. After looking around the waiting area and lobby, the certificate could not be located at all.
The wait lasted approximately fifteen minutes, after which Alan, a congenial and well-mannered host, seated us at a lovely fireside table. The surrounding area was professionally decorated and clean. The table was set with white china plates, red cloth napkins, and properly placed silverware — the correct type and number for salad, dinner, and dessert — along with glasses. There was no centerpiece.
Annie was our waitress and made her initial contact a few minutes after we were seated. She greeted us politely, handed us the menus, recited three evening specials, pointed out the wine list — placed on the table beside the wall — and asked for our drink orders. Annie was highly knowledgeable about the menu and answered our questions with clarity.
Approximately ten minutes later, Annie returned with our drinks and then came back again with a basket of freshly baked bread, oil, and salad plates. She then asked if we were ready to order. We both ordered the prime rib, reportedly the best in town according to one of the other patrons. We also both ordered a side salad and a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon. The food took twenty minutes or more to arrive, but the atmosphere was so pleasant that the time passed quickly.
