It would, however, be prudent to note that the implementation of an EHR system is not a trouble-free process. There are a number of risks that organizations ought to factor in to ensure the success of EHR implementation.

This paper assesses those risks. In addition to highlighting the nature of risks an organization is likely to encounter during EHR implementation, it also proposes strategies that could be deployed to manage or mitigate them. The six specific risk items addressed are: unexpected expenses, system incompatibility, data privacy compliance, inadequate training, workflow disruption, and planning failure.

The Relevance of EHRs in the Contemporary Healthcare Environment

There is no doubt that technology has transformed multiple aspects of modern life, and the healthcare sector has been among the greatest beneficiaries of these advances. As an information-rich enterprise, healthcare has significantly benefited from electronic health record systems. EHRs have driven notable improvements in information flow across care settings. In the context of EHR implementation, risk management, as Kelley (2016) points out, may be undertaken in various formats, such as failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and root cause analysis.

As noted from the outset, the successful implementation of EHR systems brings many benefits to the organization. The return on investment extends beyond financial gains: in addition to expedited reimbursements, EHRs facilitate further enhancement of healthcare delivery. Moreover, with a robust EHR system in place, staff are likely to experience higher morale and perform their various roles more effectively.

Nevertheless, EHR implementation is fraught with many risks, as highlighted throughout this paper. Fortunately, there are well-established strategies that organizations can deploy to address them. The approaches outlined here — risk mitigation, risk transfer, risk avoidance, and risk acceptance — deserve serious consideration, particularly given that the transition to EHRs from document-based systems is largely inevitable. It remains one of the healthcare sector's most consequential and beneficial reforms.
