What is 19th Century?

The nineteenth century stands as one of the most transformative periods in modern history, making it a central subject across disciplines including history, literature, art history, political science, and sociology. Courses examining this era ask students to grapple with sweeping changes in society, power, and governance — from the rise of nation-states and transnational movements to mass migration, industrialization, and the reshaping of urban life. The period's complexity, spanning revolutions, reform movements, and cultural upheaval across multiple continents, gives it enduring academic relevance and offers rich material for argument and analysis.

The papers archived on this topic reflect a wide range of approaches. Historical and comparative essays examine phenomena such as dramatic American urban growth, the influences of the French and American revolutions, and the experiences of Italian immigrants. Literary and cultural analysis appears through works like Charles Dickens's Hard Times and explorations of the body and nudity in nineteenth-century art. Other papers take a political or policy angle, addressing topics like Zionism, national health care reform, and the Underground Railroad as described by Levi Coffin. Some essays move between centuries to draw contrasts, such as comparing Puritan society to nineteenth-century Americans, showing how the period is often best understood in relation to what came before and after.

A strong essay on this topic begins with a focused, arguable thesis rather than a broad claim about an entire century. Evidence drawn from primary sources, specific historical events, or close reading of literary and artistic works tends to carry the most weight. The most common pitfall is treating the nineteenth century as a monolith — strong essays acknowledge regional, national, and social differences rather than generalizing across vastly different contexts.

Lincoln as an outsider leader and transformational change
Schumpeter's essay (Dec 1st 2012) "Lincoln and leadership" in the Economist discusses Lincoln's leadership skills, showing how, occasionally, in American – and general history a leader arose who had unconventional leadership skills and was, indeed, an outsider to the system. Sometimes, in fact – and extraordinarily as it was – the outsider was better than eh insider: more skilled, knowledgeable. He could see it with a fresh eye. Schumpeter (2012) therefore proposes that it may be this very skill of the outsider: the ability to see the situation with a certain freshness that enables him to succeed and makes him so fitting for the task. Lincoln was one of these outsiders… The essay proceeds to discuss various leadership skills and to demarcate between insider and outsider

Political reforms needed to restore American democracy and civic virtue
Restoring democracy and civic virtue in the United States will require major reforms that reduce the power of corporations, elites and special interests in the whole political process. Right now, there is a radical disconnect between the political and economic elites and the needs and interests of the ordinary voters. Most people today realize that the country is in its worse crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s, but government and the political system seem dysfunctional and incapable of dealing with it. Removing the power and control of big money from the political process forever would be the most important step in revitalizing American democracy and making the system more representative and accountable. So would eliminating the Electoral College and electing the president and vice president by a majority of the popular vote. Despite the protests of small states, only this type of reform might actually pressure presidential candidates to campaign more widely for votes instead of concentrating on a few large states, or visiting big cities where the wealthiest donors reside. In addition, the Senate seems particularly dysfunctional and more responsive to the needs of elites and corporate interests than the people. Its use of the filibuster was always an absurdity, especially when the South frequently united in a bloc to prevent blacks from obtaining civil and political rights, and the system today simply maintains a kind of status quo that concentrates all wealth and power at the upper levels of society.
