What is Academic?

Academic life encompasses the structures, practices, and challenges that define learning and intellectual development within educational institutions. It surfaces across virtually every discipline — from education and psychology to business and library science — because questions about how students learn, succeed, and navigate institutional systems are relevant in almost any field of study. What makes this topic academically interesting is its breadth: it bridges individual experience, institutional policy, and broader social forces, making it possible to approach from multiple theoretical and practical perspectives.

The papers gathered here reflect a wide range of approaches. Some focus on specific support systems and services, such as counselling interventions, homework centers, and academic reference services, examining how these resources shape student outcomes. Others take a case-study or institutional angle, looking at particular colleges or organizational structures. A number of papers address professional and personal development, including goal statements and leadership pathways, while others explore how external pressures — such as forced compliance or mandatory religious practices — affect academic and social learning. This mix of empirical, reflective, and policy-oriented approaches shows how broadly the academic experience can be studied.

A strong essay on an academic topic benefits from a tightly scoped thesis that connects a specific practice, policy, or experience to measurable or well-documented outcomes. Evidence drawn from educational research, institutional data, or closely analyzed case studies tends to carry the most weight. One common pitfall is treating "academic success" as self-evident — strong essays define what success means in context, whether that involves knowledge retention, professional readiness, or equitable access to support, rather than assuming a single universal standard.

Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation: theoretical foundations and distinctions
The objective of this study is to examine intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation. Toward this end this work will examine the literature in this area of study. The work of Covington and Mueller (2001) states that it has been believed that providing extrinsic rewards such as "praise, gold stars, and school grades – inhibits the will of students to learn." (p.157) Covington and Mueller believe that this belief is upheld by "the widely held assumption that intrinsic and extrinsic motivation are not just separate processes, but in compatible, if not antagonistic." (p.157) The debate is ongoing as to whether extrinsic (external ) or intrinsic (internal) motivation is more effective in motivating the individual to learning, achieving, or otherwise realizing higher levels of performance or more optimally achieved behavior. While testing in previous studies has shown both types of motivation to be effective, the question remains as to whether extrinsic or intrinsic motivation is more effective in motivating the individual.

Ethical violations and white-collar crime in professional occupations
This paper consists of a series of questions about occupationally-related white collar crimes. While people often think of white collar crime as solely being relegated to the world of business, white collar crime can also occur in the fields of medicine, law, academia, and even religious organizations. In fact, the insularity of these professions can act as unwitting facilitators of crime.

Walter Lippmann's critique of Wilsonian democracy and expertise
This paper offers a reading of Walter Lippmann's political proposals in his seminal 1914 text Drift and Mastery. The paper approaches Lippmann's stance by attempting to extrapolate what Lippmann's view of subsequent developments in twentieth century American politics would be. Starting from Lippmann's generally supportive stance toward the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, and toward Woodrow Wilson, the paper examines Lippmann's potential response to the emergence of civil rights for blacks, women's suffrage, and the New Deal, among other large-scale social trends.
