What is Behavior?

Behavior sits at the intersection of psychology, sociology, criminal justice, and organizational studies, making it one of the most broadly examined subjects in undergraduate and graduate coursework. What makes it academically compelling is its relevance to nearly every domain of human life — from how individuals respond to stress and social pressure to how institutions shape and regulate conduct. Courses in cognitive psychology, ethics, public administration, and criminal justice all use behavior as a central lens because understanding why people act as they do is foundational to addressing practical problems in those fields.

The papers archived on this topic reflect a genuinely wide range of approaches. Some take a theoretical angle, such as comparing behaviorism and cognitive psychology to examine how different frameworks explain individual action. Others are case-study driven, applying behavioral concepts to specific scenarios in criminal justice, corrections administration, and law enforcement ethics. Additional papers address applied concerns — fostering appropriate behavior in learning environments, analyzing safety programs, or exploring how stress affects performance within public organizations. Social influences on behavior and the role of kinship systems in shaping conduct also appear, pointing to a sociological strand running through the collection.

A strong essay on behavior needs a focused thesis that specifies which type of behavior is being examined, in what context, and through which theoretical lens. Evidence carries the most weight when it connects observable actions to underlying causes — whether psychological, social, or institutional. The most common pitfall is treating behavior as a vague, catch-all concept; scoping the argument around a specific population, setting, or framework keeps analysis concrete and persuasive.

Genetic Influence on MDMA Neurotoxicity and Metabolism
Ecstasy (MDMA) is a popular drug that produces significant adverse effects, including neurotoxicity. The mechanisms underlying MDMA-induced neurotoxicity have been suggested to be due to the genetic variability in how well the drug is metabolized in the liver. Accordingly, loss of function cytochrome P450 (CYP2D6) alleles contribute to elevated serum levels of MDMA. Locally, MDMA probably increases the release of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, the sustained exposure of nerve endings to these catecholamines, and in the presence of the met/met variant of catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) could contribute to the accumulation of catechol reactive oxygen species. Whether this represents the mechanism for MDMA-induced neurotoxicity will have to await the findings of future research studies.

Caregiver Compassion Fatigue: Warning Signs and Coping
Those who care for others as part of their professional duties must understand the nature of caregiver fatigue and the basics of caring for oneself. Generally, the focus of a caregiver remains on the care recipient to such a degree that personal limitations are ignored and self-care principles are shunted to the background. Caregivers rarely have realistic expectations about the long-term impact of caregiving, and invariably consider themselves up to the challenge. The immediacy of caregiving tends to obfuscate considerations about self-care and the end result is that caregivers tend not to develop a long-term plan for their own health and care. Simple issues such as pacing oneself seem unreasonable or impossible to attain in the stressful environment of caregiving.

Mental vs. Physical Illness: Diagnosis, Causes, and Treatment
Instead, a newer model that combines both the physical and mental aspects of illness, or the Health Psychology Model, sees that yes, there are differences in symptoms, diagnosis, and care between mental and physical ailments, but that humans are holistic beings and both physical and mental disease affects the other. It is this this holistic continuum that truly defines the new model – the new model focuses on interaction, focuses on holism, and focuses less on simply the cause of disease, but ways to improve the quality of life to prevent disease
