What is Cocaine?

Cocaine is a powerful stimulant with significant medical, legal, social, and economic dimensions, making it a subject of serious academic inquiry across multiple disciplines. Students encounter this topic in courses ranging from criminal justice and public health to economics, psychology, and literature. Its status as both a controlled substance and a major illicit commodity gives it particular academic weight, since it sits at the intersection of addiction science, policy debate, and cultural history. Works like Bret Easton Ellis's Less Than Zero have brought cocaine into literary analysis, while its role in funding drug cartels has drawn sustained attention from political science and economics scholars alike.

The papers archived on this topic reflect a notably broad range of approaches. Some take a pharmacological angle, examining how cocaine and other psychoactive drugs affect the brain, stress responses, and sleep. Others adopt a policy or legal framework, analyzing the criminal justice system—courts, policing, and prisons—in relation to drug offenses, or weighing the economic consequences of legalization. Comparative approaches appear as well, setting cocaine against crack or mapping its use patterns alongside other substances like heroin and alcohol. A smaller body of work focuses on treatment, counseling, and support systems for users and youth populations.

A strong essay on cocaine should establish a focused, arguable thesis rather than simply cataloguing effects or statistics. Evidence drawn from health research, economic data, or close textual analysis carries the most weight depending on the angle chosen. The most common pitfall is scope creep—trying to address addiction, policy, neuroscience, and culture simultaneously leaves no room for sustained argument. Committing to one lens and following it rigorously produces a far more persuasive result.

Contemporary problems in the U.S. corrections system
The first issue that exits with the U.S. corrections system is that of priorities. The system is inherently reactive as oppose to proactive in regards to preventing future offenses. I believe the U.S. corrections system can do much more in regards to education, follow up, and subsequent matriculation into general society. More emphasis should first be placed on properly educating those in the corrections system. It is very common for individuals to repeat crimes due in part to lack of skills to enter the workforce. This is now becoming especially true as individuals are now competing for fewer jobs within the overall U.S. economy. Last month, only 69,000 jobs were added to the economy. The jobs added last month don't even keep pace with the U.S. population growth. If individuals with no prior criminal activity are finding it difficult to find jobs, how then can we, with any semblance of honesty, expect a criminal to do so effectively? Much more emphasis therefore must be placed on training individuals on the skills of the future in order to better compete for jobs and subsequently, become better members of society.

Neural correlates of environmental triggers in drug relapse
The relapse rate for drug abusers undergoing treatment is very high, around 50 percent, because the contributing factors are so complex that identifying which individuals need more intense intervention has been difficult. Researchers are beginning to identify in what ways brain function differs in drug users, with some success. Geneticists have also identified DNA markers that seem to predict those having a high risk of relapse. This essay will examine the results of recent research efforts in an effort to describe how close scientists are to providing treatment suggestions that could potentially lower relapse rates.
