Coming of age narratives do not necessarily depict complete struggles, or complete journeys to maturity. Some narratives of coming of age depict a protagonist that reaches maturity only through a great struggle.

This paper compares three commonly-anthologized coming of age stories: "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker, "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan and like “The Lesson" by Toni Cade Bambara. The common themes in all three stories are compared. Particular emphasis is given to the lack of communication between old and young.
