What is Contrast?

Like a compare and contrast essay, a contrast essay asks you to choose two or more items and ideas and write about them.  However, instead of highlighting similarities between the two things, a contrast essay will describe how they are different.  It is important to note that, in order to have an effective contrast essay, there must be some similarities or shared middle ground between the things being contrasted.  A contrast essay that focused on the differences between a roller skate and the planet Jupiter would contain a lot of contrast, but would be almost incoherent.  However, a contrast essay that focused on the differences in Earth and Jupiter would start from the point where they are similar (planets in the same solar system) and then highlight differences.

French Revolution: Taking a Macro
This paper compares two historical approaches to the French Revolution: the Origins of the French Revolution by historian William Doyle and Religion and Revolution in France: 1780-1804 by historian Nigel Aston. Doyle takes a 'macro' view of the conflict, while Aston focuses on a specific aspect of the Revolution. However, both authors agree that the course of the Revolution was far from inevitable.

Shakespeare\'s Play Macbeth, Women Play Influence Macbeth
William Shakespeare's play Macbeth provides an intriguing account involving concepts like greed, the influence women have on men, and the overall idea of human nature in dubious circumstances. Macbeth is the central character and he comes to employ deceiving attitudes as he becomes more and more overcome by greed. While it is actually normal to see a person being obsessed with power and coming to act in disagreement with principles he or she previously believed in, Macbeth is also significantly influenced by women who he interacts with and it is only safe to say that they play an important role in making him commit regicide.
