What is Contrast?

Like a compare and contrast essay, a contrast essay asks you to choose two or more items and ideas and write about them.  However, instead of highlighting similarities between the two things, a contrast essay will describe how they are different.  It is important to note that, in order to have an effective contrast essay, there must be some similarities or shared middle ground between the things being contrasted.  A contrast essay that focused on the differences between a roller skate and the planet Jupiter would contain a lot of contrast, but would be almost incoherent.  However, a contrast essay that focused on the differences in Earth and Jupiter would start from the point where they are similar (planets in the same solar system) and then highlight differences.

This is a brief introduction to global warming. Global warming, also called climate change, is a phenomenon that not only is a threat to other species but also has the potential drastically change the climate so that it has severe and negative consequences for the human population of the planet. The definition of global warming is as follows: The gradual increase in the temperature of the earth's atmosphere, believed to be due to the greenhouse effect caused by gases, such as Carbon Dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels or from deforestation, which trap heat that would otherwise escape from Earth; a type of greenhouse effect. Global warming, which is at least partly due to the rising concentrations of greenhouses in the atmosphere, is generally noted by primary source of greenhouse gases which is carbon dioxide (CO2).

Power and greed destroy Jacob Kent in Jack London's story
The story, the man with the gash is one that provides many lessons. The one that I find most forceful and inspiring is the way that the sailor used his mental acumen to pull himself out of his situation. The way that he did it and the fact that he managed to do so are concepts that any of us can use regardless of the situations that we may find ourselves in.
