What is Contrast?

Like a compare and contrast essay, a contrast essay asks you to choose two or more items and ideas and write about them.  However, instead of highlighting similarities between the two things, a contrast essay will describe how they are different.  It is important to note that, in order to have an effective contrast essay, there must be some similarities or shared middle ground between the things being contrasted.  A contrast essay that focused on the differences between a roller skate and the planet Jupiter would contain a lot of contrast, but would be almost incoherent.  However, a contrast essay that focused on the differences in Earth and Jupiter would start from the point where they are similar (planets in the same solar system) and then highlight differences.

Globalization's effects on children's development and identity

Thompson's article is meant to provide readers with a more complex understanding concerning how globalization affects children's development in society as a whole and in Third World Countries in particular. The writer intends to raise public awareness in order to have the social order become actively involved in making globalization have as little side effects as possible.

Employment at will doctrine in U.S. banking and ethics
The essay is about ‘employment at will'. The articles deal with the problematic situation of a dedicated employee who has been for many years loyally and diligently serving a particular company. Along comes a new boss and demands her retirement on the basis of factors such as age, gender, or other elements that he feels are detrimental to the profile of his company. The question at hand, therefore, is: is it ethical to ‘sack' this employee on the grounds of these elements alone? Shouldn't the employee be given the opportunity, perhaps, to upgrade his skills before he be abruptly dismissed? Long term relationships demand reciprocity and consideration. Shouldn't the same be here too?
