A critique is a structured form of academic writing that evaluates the strengths, weaknesses, and overall effectiveness of a source, argument, or work. It appears across disciplines — from English and philosophy to social policy, business, and film studies — because the ability to assess and respond to existing ideas is fundamental to academic thinking.
