What is Definition?

Ironically, the definition of the term “definition essay” is not very specific.  Definition essays are short pieces of writing on a particular topic.  However, not every essay on a topic can be properly labeled a definition essay.  Instead, a definition essay is an attempt to describe the topic thoroughly enough for the reader to understand it very well and might be compared to an encyclopedia entry for the topic.  Any of our example essays could provide a good start on a definition essay about the topic.  However, we have collected a sample of our best definition essays and included them below to help you explore the genre.

Domectic Violence in the United States Domestic
Introduction Domestic violence is not a new phenomenon associated with modern times. It has been a common occurrence throughout history. From a social/cultural point of view, the woman was considered the property of the man and his duty was to discipline her and the children (and slaves/servants) with thorough beatings. Consistent with eighteenth-century English common law, the only concerns about this related to the thickness of the stick that the law allowed for the beatings. Although there were some earlier unenforced laws against spousal abuse, it was only as recently as the 1970s that the U.S. justice system began to view the problem with any seriousness and consideration of domestic violence as a crime. Until that time, social services for the victims of domestic violence were almost nonexistent (Bronfman, et al., 2005).

Is American Power Declining? Are China and India the New World Superpowers?
There has been much scholarly debate as to the notion of superpowers; whether the United States will remain the lone superpower, whether the United States is in a state of decline as a superpower, and what countries, if any, will emerge as the next superpower. Some leading economists, financial advisors, and scholars argue that China and India are in line to become the next superpowers because of their increasing economic growth. But is that enough to overtake and/or even replace the United States at the top? This paper will provide historic definition as to what constitutes a superpower as well as a comprehensive review of the United States, China and India as the "leading contenders" for superpower status.
