What is Definition?

Ironically, the definition of the term “definition essay” is not very specific.  Definition essays are short pieces of writing on a particular topic.  However, not every essay on a topic can be properly labeled a definition essay.  Instead, a definition essay is an attempt to describe the topic thoroughly enough for the reader to understand it very well and might be compared to an encyclopedia entry for the topic.  Any of our example essays could provide a good start on a definition essay about the topic.  However, we have collected a sample of our best definition essays and included them below to help you explore the genre.

Recreational Activity Popular, it Must Transcend Distinctions
Cromwell saw leisure as distraction from serving God and country. James I and Henry VIII seemed to approve of leisure but , on assessment, their perspectives seemed to be the same. Leisure was acceptable to the kings as long as it served a higher need. When distracting from God and country, certain sorts of leisure were disproved. Needs of king and country preceded those of people, and all th kings blocked the people from enjoying themselves when these enjoyments conflicted with political and religious obligation. Leisure today may personify similar characteristics and serve similar ends – namely to refreshen mind and body . Yet, there are differences in that all types of leisure are truly open to all and don't serve agendas of God or country. Other agendas exist that did not apply then. History has changed.

Humans Have Wondered About Certain
Kant described a clear difference between phenomena (objects as interpreted by human understanding) and noumena (objects as things-in-themselves, those in which humans cannot directly experience). Modern phenomenology was dissatisfied with this limited approach to all things knowable, and attempts to create the conditions for the objective study of topics that are typically found to be subjective – judgments, emotions, perceptions. It focuses on a scientific method, but is not clinical or biological; but rather it seeks to use a more systematic reflection of ideas to determine a more structured approach to experience

Mind-Body Dualism: Leibniz, and Spinoza\'s
This paper examines Leibniz and Spinoza and how they approach the mind/body question.
