What is Definition?

Ironically, the definition of the term “definition essay” is not very specific.  Definition essays are short pieces of writing on a particular topic.  However, not every essay on a topic can be properly labeled a definition essay.  Instead, a definition essay is an attempt to describe the topic thoroughly enough for the reader to understand it very well and might be compared to an encyclopedia entry for the topic.  Any of our example essays could provide a good start on a definition essay about the topic.  However, we have collected a sample of our best definition essays and included them below to help you explore the genre.

Israeli and Palestinian conflict debate methodology and legal arguments
Once again, you are splitting the argument into two parts. On the one hand, there is the factual debate, for which you provide very little evidence despite making very strong claims of fact that could be readily cited properly evidenced, though I will of course the points you do mange to make. On the other hand lies the bulk of your argument, which is full of personal assumption and thinly (if at all) veiled invective and accusation, making

Utilitarianism as a self-correcting ethical theory
This essay compares the three major ethical theories in order to determine the most viable one. Utilitarianism succeeds where deontological and virtues-based approaches fail by being able to account for the reasons behind its ethical standards as well as providing a universally applicable standard of behavior. While the other two theories may have limited applications, only utilitarianism is logically coherent and universally sound, and as such is the only viable ethical theory.

Class identity and social stratification across historical societies
The modern conceptualization of identity through the prism of class has come under increased scrutiny from a variety of postmodern theorist. The reductionist approach of class scholars is decried as it ignores key sociological variables pivotal to identity formation. While, the dead of class is an ambitious notion it does demonstrate that limitation of a class only conception. New directions suggest that an intersectional approach may be more robust.

MORAL philosophy, or the science of human nature, may be treated after two different manners; each of which has its peculiar merit, and may contribute to the entertainment, instruction, and reformation of mankind. The one considers man chiefly as born for action; and as influenced in his measures by taste and sentiment; pursuing one object, and avoiding another, according to the value which these objects seem to possess, and according to the light in which they present themselves. As virtue, of all objects, is allowed to be the most valuable, this species of philosophers paint her in the most amiable colours; borrowing all helps from poetry and eloquence, and treating their subject in an easy and obvious manner, and such as is best fitted to please the imagination, and engage the affections. They select the most striking observations and instances from common life; place opposite characters in a proper contrast; and alluring us into the paths of virtue by the views of glory and happiness, direct our steps in these paths by the soundest precepts and most illustrious examples. They make us feel the difference between vice and virtue; they excite and regulate our sentiments; and so they can but bend our hearts to the love of probity and true honour, they think, that they have fully attained the end of all their labours. The other species of philosophers consider man in the light of a reasonable rather than an activ
