What is Definition?

Ironically, the definition of the term “definition essay” is not very specific.  Definition essays are short pieces of writing on a particular topic.  However, not every essay on a topic can be properly labeled a definition essay.  Instead, a definition essay is an attempt to describe the topic thoroughly enough for the reader to understand it very well and might be compared to an encyclopedia entry for the topic.  Any of our example essays could provide a good start on a definition essay about the topic.  However, we have collected a sample of our best definition essays and included them below to help you explore the genre.

Rhetorical strategies include persuasion, exemplification, description, comparison and contrast, division and classification; definition; cause and effect analysis; and argumentation. The intention of Laheij and colleagues (2011) was to inform the dental team about the prevalence and impact of bi-directional infection and to urge them to adopt better hygienic practices. The authors sued ethos, pathos, and logos in making their points in that they transmitted a sense of their credibility, placed their arguments in a logical, cause-and-effect order carefully and thoroughly defining each term, and formulated their whole in a tone of urgency telling us that, although not serious, infection, nonetheless, exists and one patient, at least, has even died from transmitted dental infection.

Canadian Feminist Issue of Any Kind
People with regular and stable access to the Internet, for example, may learn about cultures they have only imagined, or feared, or otherwise. Therefore, media has the power to broaden the experience and the horizon of consumers. Media can educate, entertain, and potentially enlighten. Of course, the disposition of the individual consumer and the cultural context within which that person is influenced contribute to the assimilation of the media into that person's experience. Nonetheless, the power and potential of media is evident; professionals across a vast spectrum of industries and underrepresented groups across the world understand this. Attempting to harness the power of media to empower and expose an underrepresented group, experience, or perspective is a worthwhile endeavor. Thus, the importance of a study of Canadian feminist media is apparent.
