What is Definition?

Ironically, the definition of the term “definition essay” is not very specific.  Definition essays are short pieces of writing on a particular topic.  However, not every essay on a topic can be properly labeled a definition essay.  Instead, a definition essay is an attempt to describe the topic thoroughly enough for the reader to understand it very well and might be compared to an encyclopedia entry for the topic.  Any of our example essays could provide a good start on a definition essay about the topic.  However, we have collected a sample of our best definition essays and included them below to help you explore the genre.

Treatment Representation of Women or Children in Nineteenth Century Victorian Literature
The representation of childhood and youth in two Victorian poets--Matthew Arnold and A.E. Housman--is examined. The issue is framed in terms of the overall reaction of Victorian poetry to the earlier Romantic movement, here discussed in terms of Wordsworth's view of childhood and Matthew Arnold's disagreement with it, in his essay on Wordsworth's poetry. Childhood and youth are examined in Victorian poems including Arnold's "The Forsaken Merman" and "Youth's Agitations", and Housman's "To an Athlete Dying Young" and "With Rue My Heart Is Laden".

Terrorism is nowadays an already established threat that is part of every security strategy of modern states. Currently, there is talk about economic, political, social security as part of the areas that the state must take into account when drafting and enabling a national security strategy.
