What is Definition?

Ironically, the definition of the term “definition essay” is not very specific.  Definition essays are short pieces of writing on a particular topic.  However, not every essay on a topic can be properly labeled a definition essay.  Instead, a definition essay is an attempt to describe the topic thoroughly enough for the reader to understand it very well and might be compared to an encyclopedia entry for the topic.  Any of our example essays could provide a good start on a definition essay about the topic.  However, we have collected a sample of our best definition essays and included them below to help you explore the genre.

Use of Derivatives in a Chosen Company
This essay analyses the use of derivatives in general and discusses their use by Rolls-Royce plc in its risk management programme. Derivatives can be used for a number of purposes, including leverage, hedging, income generation and profiting from long and short positions. Companies like Rolls-Royce use derivatives for hedging risk, allowing them a form of insurance.

Argumentative essay structure and techniques
The concept of nature is examined and discussed in two works: the poem "The St. Lawrence and the Saguenay" by Charles Sangster and the novel "White Noise" by Don DeLillo. Both works are examined for what they say about human alienation from the natural world. In Sangster, human alienation from nature is conceived of positively---as a way of returning to ideas of God and of human love. In DeLillo, the alienation from nature is almost complete: technology has become a replacement, and language and thought are evasive and anxiety-ridden.
