Eric Clapton - How is Authenticity Constructed?
Authenticity is a major issue in discourses on popular music, and seems to be the bedrock of the distinction between 'pop' and 'rock', i.e., whether musicians can be trusted ('rock') or not ('pop'), which comes down to the distinction of whether musicians are 'authentic' or 'commercial' (Moore, 2002). In these discourses, authenticity is assumed to mean 'true to its origins'.
Certain authors have pondered that this distinction may be illusory, but even so, have divided authenticity into several categories (Moore, 2002): first person authenticity, where original music is performed in a manner that makes the audience believe the music is authentic: that is, authentically created, and performed; and third person authenticity, where a performer of music succeeds in conveying the impression of having accurately conveyed the expression of an - absent - other (Moore, 2002).

ERIC CLAPTON: Best known for his involvement in the band Cream (Clapton on guitar, Jack Bruce on Bass and Ginger Baker on drums), Clapton was perhaps the first guitarist to successfully combine a free-from musical concept with mass appeal. He was also one of the first rock musicians to gain a large following based on his instrumental abilities and creative musicianship. Along with Jimi Hendrix, Clapton remains one the best examples of consistency as a lead guitarist in the rock field.
LED ZEPPELIN: In the mid-1960's, guitarist Jimmy Page joined the Yardbirds which soon led to the creation of Led Zeppelin, made up of Page, Robert Plant on vocals, John Paul Jones on bass and John Bonham on drums. As a band, Led Zeppelin exerted a profound and very recognizable influence on rock bands and guitar players both nationally and internationally. Page's carefully calculated guitar frenzy, engineered through the use of distortion, surrounded Plant's expressive vocals to create a tension and excitement rarely matched by Zeppelin's numerous emulators in the 1970's and beyond.
PINK FLOYD: Composed of original singer Syd Barret and later replaced by David Gilmour on guitar (along with original members Roger Waters on bass, Rick Wright on keyboards and Nick Mason on drums), Pink Floyd incorporated many new musical sounds based on the use of electronic effects and the synthesizer. Musically, the band created brand-new ways to express themselves on their various instruments and launched a very complex musical idiom based on experimentation and innovation. During the decade between 1960-1970, Hays' work was all over representations of popular American culture. He had also produced amazing illustrations of great ock, Jazz, and Blues singers, which had a dark twist according to his stylistic expression (see Image B). Reggae music, born of a combination of R&B, blues, jazz, and traditional African music, and combined with a religious tradition, was unique to Jamaica at a time when the country was looking for her identity. The combination of political messages, religious connotation, and raw sound was ideal for the changing society of the time.
