About This Topic

Football is one of the most widely studied subjects in sports-related coursework, appearing across disciplines including physical education, business, media studies, sociology, and communication. Its academic appeal lies in the intersection of athletic performance, commercial enterprise, cultural identity, and social influence. Students explore football not only as a game but as a phenomenon that shapes communities, drives economic activity, and reflects broader values within society. The sport's massive global following, particularly around leagues like the English Premier League and high-profile events like the Super Bowl, gives writers a rich and accessible subject with both local and international dimensions.

Papers on this topic take a variety of approaches. Some focus on physiological and physical comparisons, examining what the sport demands of players' bodies and minds. Others take a business or financial lens, analyzing team management, advertising, and commercial strategy — including the effectiveness of specific campaigns like Super Bowl commercials. Sociological and cultural angles are also common, with writers exploring football's relationship to society, fan identity, and popularity. Additional approaches include personal narrative, policy analysis around issues like college football program decisions, and media-focused arguments about how the sport is represented and consumed.

A strong essay on football benefits from a focused thesis that commits to one angle — cultural, commercial, physical, or social — rather than trying to cover the sport broadly. Evidence drawn from specific games, teams, player experiences, or industry data tends to carry more weight than general observations. The most common pitfall is treating "football" as a self-evident topic without defining which aspect of the sport the argument actually addresses, which leaves essays feeling unfocused and underdeveloped.

Symbolism and Justice in August Wilson's Fences
This play examines the use of symbolism in August Wilson's Fences, and argues that the symbols all correlate to the theme of injustice in Wilson's play. Baseball is used as a symbol of the injustice of segregation, but crucially the play's setting after baseball segregation has ended does not fill the protagonist, Troy Maxson, with gratitude, but bitterness. As a result Troy perpetuates the injustice against his own son, when the boy is offered a football scholarship. Finally the most expansive symbol in the play--that of the injured Gabe and his belief that he must use his trumped to announce the Last Judgment--demonstrates, in the play's conclusion, that Wilson's purpose is to ask us to imagine a transcendent justice, in which the wrongs done against Troy, and the wrongs done by him, can be evaluated in the context of history.
