What is Life?

Life as an academic topic appears across nearly every discipline because it touches the fundamental conditions of human existence — how individuals develop, make choices, navigate systems, and find meaning. In personal issues courses, sociology, nursing, literature, and ethics, students are asked to examine what shapes lived experience and how institutions, relationships, and culture either support or constrain individual ability. The topic resists easy definition, which is precisely what makes it intellectually rich: it forces writers to clarify terms, interrogate assumptions, and connect abstract concepts to concrete human realities.

The papers archived here reflect a genuinely wide range of approaches. Literary analysis appears in essays on works such as Bernice Morgan's fiction and Bessie Head's "The Prisoner Who Wore Glasses," where writers examine how characters construct identity, belonging, and personal freedom. Policy and ethical frameworks drive essays on abortion, DNR legislation, and prison overcrowding, while sociological and cultural analysis informs work on parenting styles, family therapy, and soccer hooliganism. Observational and practice-based writing — such as operating room reflections and evidence-based nursing — grounds the topic in professional experience, showing how the concept of life plays out in direct care and institutional settings.

A strong essay on this topic begins with a focused, arguable thesis rather than a broad statement about life in general. Evidence drawn from specific texts, case studies, policy documents, or observed practice carries far more weight than vague generalization. The most common pitfall is treating "life" as self-evident — a compelling essay defines its scope early, specifying which dimension of individual experience or social process it actually intends to examine.

Environmental spheres and their interconnected effects on human society
This study answers 20 questions and discusses which of the interrelationships between the environmental spheres, in your experience, has had the biggest effect on human society, or vice versa. Examples are provided. A specifically important aspect of the atmosphere is that the atmosphere serves a vital protective function in that it absorbs highly energetic ultraviolet radiation from the sun that would kill living organisms exposed to it. The atmosphere stabilizes the temperature of the earth and is the medium in which water evaporated from oceans as the first step in the hydrologic cycle is transported over land masses to fall as rain over land." Islamophobia and nationalism in post-9/11 America
More than a decade after 9/11, a retrospective view of racism and nationalism in America might points to a reverse J-curve—at least in the private realm of most people living in the USA. Governmental and political reactions may still run at fevered pace, and some would say the devastation has been insidious, seeping far beyond the bounds of the attack zones. "Ten years has given us time to see the tidal waves of post-9/11 changes in our society and our world. For all the tragedy of 9/11 with the thousands killed on that day, the after-effects are far more troubling" (Rashid, 2011, 754.) Conventional wisdom has it that racism and nationalism are flip sides of the same coin. If this tack is taken, the simultaneous rise in nationalism and racism following 9/11 makes sense—so too, does the rise of patriotism. Though reactions varied widely, overall, Americans exhibited heightened expressions of national solidarity and racism directed at those who resembled—or could be mistaken for—radical Islamists. The brand of racism that arose after 9/11 can fairly be termed Islamophobia.

Bystander effect and intervention in Matthew Buford's suicide crisis
Conformity in crowds causes inaction in emergency situations because people are taught to respect privacy, not look too closely at others in public, and not to stare. This decreases the chances of victims receiving help in emergency situations. Obedience to authority is another factor because of prestige of the authority or personal responsibility felt by the bystanders.

Male rape: prevalence, underreporting, and societal perceptions
In this paper, the crime of rape on men is discussed. On October 15, 2011 it was reported that in Zimbabwe three women had been arrested for sexually assaulting male hitchhikers, after each of the seventeen victims positively identified the three women (Mavhunga, 2011). Male rape is now recognized as a criminal act. People in our society disagree that such cases can be classified as rape, because of the nature of the activity involved. It is argued that a man will ejaculate when he is inspired and wishes himself to do so, regardless of whether he is willing or not; and people think that there must be involvement of two people for rape to happen and taking the one's side thoughtlessly is not good. Nevertheless, women are still considered to be responsible for such crimes and this is evident from the fact that when a woman shows her insatiability for sexual intercourse, only then men are raped whereas medically, it is proven that men have higher desire for intercourse and men do not find it that easy to overcome such feelings. Somehow, in the gay community it is just opposite.
