In layman's terms, a bank can be described as a financial organization whose primary task is to take in funds, i.e., in the form of deposits from those with money, pool them and then lend them to those who need it (making a loan). They basically act as payment agents. The bank's main source of income is from the interest it charges the borrowers on these loans.
