What is Money?

Money, as a subject within government and economic study, sits at the intersection of policy, financial theory, and institutional behavior. Students across macroeconomics, public finance, banking, and business policy courses write about it because it shapes how governments regulate markets, how interest rates are set, and how economic growth is managed. The topic is academically rich because it connects abstract theory — such as the quantity theory of money and the relationship between inflation and interest rates, as examined through thinkers like Wicksell — to concrete policy decisions affecting businesses and consumers alike.

The papers archived here reflect a wide range of approaches. Some engage directly with macroeconomic frameworks, analyzing inflation, interest rates, and money supply through theoretical lenses. Others take a case-study approach, examining specific companies such as British Petroleum and Mars Incorporated to explore how financial principles operate in real business environments. Additional papers focus on applied financial concepts, including the time value of money calculations, consumer credit practices, and venture opportunity screening. A few engage with industry-specific challenges, such as the economic analysis found in works like Adam Pilarski's examination of aviation profitability.

A strong essay on money in a government or policy context requires a focused thesis that connects a specific financial mechanism — such as credit, interest rates, or monetary supply — to a measurable outcome like inflation or economic growth. Evidence drawn from institutional data, economic models, or documented business cases carries the most weight. A common pitfall is treating money as a purely abstract concept without grounding arguments in specific policy contexts, real markets, or traceable economic consequences.

Obesity in America: One Person's Story and Social Context
For this assignment I interviewed an obese individual from the South Florida area. I found it difficult to select an individual based on their physical condition. It was definitely a challenge to, not only identify such an individual, but also find a way to approach them without being insulting or making the person feel uncomfortable about their condition obesity in any way. Although I am familiar with some obese people through my network of friends and family, I chose to select an individual that I was not acquainted with so that there was slightly less pressure to not be offensive in anyway. For example, I obviously know that this is a sensitive subject for many obese people, and I was personally worried that if I somehow offended someone that was within my network that it would cause some kind of issue for my personal friends or family.

Kozol's Shame of the Nation: School Segregation Analysis
Literature – The Shame of the Nation: The Restoration of Apartheid Schooling in America The Shame of the Nation: The Restoration of Apartheid Schooling explores the systematic dismantling of desegregation achieved by Brown v. Board of Education and the civil rights movement. While individuals and institutions pay lip service to Thurgood Marshall's claim that separate-but-equal is impossible, they achieve very harmful segregation in the name of progressive school reform. This system stacks the deck against nonwhite children confined to segregated schools and robs them of the quality education and opportunities supposedly granted to all. Only a new civil rights movement, aided by state and federal legislation and courts, can effectively combat the concerted segregation now plaguing America's educational system. ?

Why Books Are Considered Mass Media: Definition and Examples
Books are considered mass media due to their widespread appeal rather than physical book sales. Books are unique in that the notions imbedded within them often transcend tradition sales figures. The concepts and ideas contained in books can quickly spread without the need for individuals to physically purchase the book. For example, aspects of Christianity are well known even by those who have yet to purchase a physical copy of the Bible. The notions of giving, charity, honesty, integrity, and pursuit of knowledge are all concepts embedded within the Bible. Many individuals are therefore aware of these concepts and apply them daily without physically purchasing the Bible. The advent of the internet and globalization has further expanded this notion of "mass" media relative to actual book sales.
