What is Muslim?

Islam and Muslim identity are studied across a wide range of academic disciplines, including religious studies, history, political science, sociology, and cultural studies. Students are drawn to this topic because it sits at the intersection of theology, law, politics, and social life, making it rich material for academic inquiry. The diversity within Muslim communities — spanning beliefs, practices, regions, and historical periods — gives writers substantial ground to explore, whether examining core religious obligations such as almsgiving, the development of Islamic thought, or the historical presence of Muslims in Europe and the United States.

The papers archived on this topic reflect a broad range of analytical approaches. Some take a historical angle, tracing the roots of Islamic fundamentalism or charting Muslim communities across continents and centuries. Others are comparative, placing Islam alongside Christianity, Judaism, and Buddhism to examine shared tensions and distinctions among world religions. Still others adopt a policy or social lens, addressing Muslim and non-Muslim relations, cultural competency in law enforcement and corrections settings, and civil liberties cases involving Muslim communities. This variety shows how Muslim identity and Islamic practice can be examined through theological, intercultural, and political frameworks.

A strong essay on this topic begins with a focused, arguable thesis rather than a broad survey of Islam as a whole. Evidence drawn from primary religious texts, historical scholarship, or documented case studies tends to carry the most weight. One common pitfall is conflating the diversity of Muslim communities into a single, monolithic portrayal — strong writers remain specific about region, era, and context to avoid overgeneralization.

Distinguishing Islam from Islamism: historical origins and core principles
Islamaphobia is one of the most catching illnesses of nowadays and on the rise. However, Islamaphobia is caused by an erogenous impression of Islam where people make the mistake of mixing up Islamists with Moslems. Moslems, according to the way I see it, are the true practitioners of historical Islam that had developed throughout the generations but stayed close to religion. Islamism, on the other hand, is a politicized Islam that attempts to constrain the Islam of the Koran to a contemporary political agenda. Knowing more about historic Islam and the underpinnings of the Islamic faith can help us make a distinction between Islamism and between Islam or between Islamists and Moslems.

The Ahmadi Muslim community: non-violence and theological distinction
For the purposes of this paper I visited the local Ahmaddiya Muslim Community or as they prefer to called Ahmadis. Ahmadis are a sub-sect of the Islamic Community. What attracted to me to study this community was that unlike the general image we have of the Islamic community, this community is non-violent and is considered heretical by the larger Islamic community for having a prophet in succession to Muhammad, the founder of the Islamic faith. In many Muslim majority countries the Ahmadis are banned and in many others they have been ex-communicated from the Islamic mainstream.

Developing transformational leadership in educational organizations
The concept of leadership is one that has for along time dominated the discussion and literature in the fields of organizational science and management .In the last couples of decades however, leadership as a concept has found its way into educational and school improvement literature and discussions (Bennett et al, 2003; Coleman and Earley, 2005). More specifically, there is a interest in the role that strategic leadership plays in the running of oerganizations. The main focus however is the role of teachers and managers in the communication of organization vision to the stakeholders as well as the alignment of organizational vision with strategy (Davies & Ellison,2003). In this paper, I present a reflective account of my experience and views when it comes to the development of an effective leadership system within the transformational leadership framework.

Seattle's domestic terrorism incidents and emergency management response
Seattle has been fortunate in that it has never experienced an actual international attack, but has had three major domestic incidents since 1999 that continue to be in the minds of Emergency Management professionals. In 1999, Ahmed Ressam, an Al-Qaeda operative, was apprehended smuggling bomb-making materials into Port Angeles. Because this was so close to the New Year's Eve Millennium event, the New Year's celebration at the Seattle Center was cancelled. Subsequently, the actual target was identified as Los Angeles International Airport
