Body Language and Paramedics Introduction Among the various way humans communicate – through the use of the voice, the written word, sign language (for the hearing impaired) or through body language – the one communication style that is perhaps least recognized by the layperson is body language. Body language is also likely the least understood, albeit scholars and researchers assert that it body language plays a substantial role in human communication activities. This paper will discuss how body language works, why it is vital in terms of human communication and understanding, and it will also review and critique the work of first responders (in specifics, paramedics) and why a thorough understanding of body language is important to paramedics.

Social psychology is the branch of psychology that deals with the human behavior and actions in a social situation. However, nonverbal communication facilitates the experts of the field to better understand the human behavior and nature when interacting socially. When two cultures meet, both are likely to be ethnocentric. Those from the United States, try to find similarities in the other cultures with that of their own. Brazil as a country is unique in many ways. It is stated that what was considered non fashionable in US – for example being fat is taken as natural in Brazil. Thus in that culture messages regarding body fitness may have a different meaning than in the weight and figure conscious US. The culture of the US will enter into all communications that emanates from the country. As a result it is possible that the communication development as seen from the US angle may not match those that are at the receiving end in Brazil and vice versa.

Interpersonal communication lies at the junction of our cultural understanding and construction and consequently, each of these components influences one another in more ways we can imagine.
