What is People?

The study of people sits at the center of nearly every academic discipline, from sociology and psychology to literature, public health, and political science. Essays grouped under this broad topic examine human behavior, identity, social roles, and the systems that shape individual lives. Because the subject touches so many fields, students encounter it in introductory composition courses, upper-division humanities seminars, and professional programs alike. Works like Sophocles' Oedipus the King and Langston Hughes' "Night Funeral in Harlem" appear alongside nursing research and immigration policy, reflecting how questions about what it means to be human cross disciplinary boundaries and resist simple answers.

The papers archived here take a wide range of approaches. Literary analysis appears in close readings of Hughes and Sophocles, while social and policy perspectives drive essays on immigration, reintegration after incarceration, and technology dependence. Applied professional angles emerge in work on nursing evidence-based practice, physical education teacher burnout, and strategic staffing. Personal narrative and descriptive writing feature in essays about historical figures and memorable life events, while research-oriented pieces examine extracurricular activity, premarital factors, and quality improvement initiatives. This variety shows that writing about people can mean analyzing a character, evaluating a workplace policy, or reflecting on lived experience.

A strong essay on any aspect of this topic needs a focused, arguable thesis rather than a general statement about humanity. Evidence that carries weight includes specific examples, credible research, or close textual detail depending on the assignment type. The most common pitfall is scope creep — trying to address all of society when the essay should examine one clear issue, case, or idea in meaningful depth.

Comparing twelve-step and cognitive-behavioral treatment for dual diagnosis
Brooks and Penn (2003) compared the effectiveness of the 12-step approach with the cognitive-behavioral (Self-Management and Recovery Training [SMART]) approach for people with a dual diagnosis of serious mental illness and substance use disorder. The 112 participants were tested in in an intensive outpatient/partial hospitalization setting and were assigned to two treatment conditions. 50 participants completed the 6-month treatment program. The participants were tested during five intermittent periods. Researchers discovered that the 12 Steps program was more efficacious in decreasing alcohol use and increasing social interactions, but that it resulted in a worsening of medical problems, health status, employment status, and psychiatric hospitalization. SMART, on the other hand, showed positive associating with finding employment and improved psychiatric status, but it resulted in increased drug (specifically marijuana) use. Both approaches showed decrease in use of alcohol and increase in life satisfaction. The participants who stayed longer with either program showed greater improvement, whilst completion of the entire program showed positive association with better financial health, less alcohol use, and fewer medical problems.

Ethical practice in marriage and family therapy with Black families
We are living in an extremely difficult and increasingly complex world. Every issue that is raised has several varied points of view and dialogues. Similarly, traditional institutions such as religion and marriage are also being questioned by a good number of people. Seeing all this, it can be easily concluded that there are very few absolutes that are out there to guide our lives. If that is the case, it means that we are all left to ourselves to weigh up and assess the circumstances and to make decisions accordingly. This is what we call the ethical position. However, people need to interact and exchange their experiences socially to create new ideas. This social exchange of views helps people to analyze and comprehend the problematic situation and so that fruitful steps can be taken to avoid the difficulties. This interaction takes place on a daily basis and also occurs in the relationship between therapist and client. The ethical position thus, allows the therapist and the client "to own their presuppositions and understand the effect that they have on their lives". It is an exceedingly important characteristic required in a therapist to maintain ethical requirements while counseling the couples or during family therapy (Inger & Inger, 1994).
