What is People?

The study of people sits at the center of nearly every academic discipline, from sociology and psychology to literature, public health, and political science. Essays grouped under this broad topic examine human behavior, identity, social roles, and the systems that shape individual lives. Because the subject touches so many fields, students encounter it in introductory composition courses, upper-division humanities seminars, and professional programs alike. Works like Sophocles' Oedipus the King and Langston Hughes' "Night Funeral in Harlem" appear alongside nursing research and immigration policy, reflecting how questions about what it means to be human cross disciplinary boundaries and resist simple answers.

The papers archived here take a wide range of approaches. Literary analysis appears in close readings of Hughes and Sophocles, while social and policy perspectives drive essays on immigration, reintegration after incarceration, and technology dependence. Applied professional angles emerge in work on nursing evidence-based practice, physical education teacher burnout, and strategic staffing. Personal narrative and descriptive writing feature in essays about historical figures and memorable life events, while research-oriented pieces examine extracurricular activity, premarital factors, and quality improvement initiatives. This variety shows that writing about people can mean analyzing a character, evaluating a workplace policy, or reflecting on lived experience.

A strong essay on any aspect of this topic needs a focused, arguable thesis rather than a general statement about humanity. Evidence that carries weight includes specific examples, credible research, or close textual detail depending on the assignment type. The most common pitfall is scope creep — trying to address all of society when the essay should examine one clear issue, case, or idea in meaningful depth.

Out-of-home care and delinquency risk among maltreated youth
The transition of youth from adolescence to adulthood is usually a difficult and painful period. This is an even more difficult time for the youth who are removed from the home of biological parents to be placed into out-of-home care. For them, they not only had the experience of maltreatment, hurt or neglected, but also are facing the uncertainties associated with being removed from the original family. Under this situation, their behavior development may be troublesome, as they may desire returning to the original home or conflict with foster parents and siblings. As a result, such children may join a delinquency group for support. If the experience of out-of-home care affects youth behavior negatively and can promote delinquency, then out-of-home care is at least the second great tragedy in a difficult upbringing.

African-American political participation and access during Reconstruction
African Americans endured a lengthy struggle to get as many civil rights as they presently have. Education played a huge part of this process, as was presaged by W.E.B. Du Bois in his essay "The Talented Tenth". Ultimately, these people had to learn to use the political, social and legislative tools of the U.S. to achieve this goal.

Modernist writers Joyce, Kafka, and Lawrence and contemporary literature
The contrast between Modernist and Contemporary literature is vast. Both reflect the particular ages that they were created in. Modernism was authored in the late 19th to early 20th centuries when psychodynamics was on its rise; existentialist philosophy was the philosophy of the moment, and man, emerging from one World War was attempting to understand his way in the world and was disillusioned with existence. Religion, too, was supplanted by influential philosophers such as Nietzsche, and break in fall ways was conducted with the past. Modernism and post-modernism, represented by chaos, new experimental forms of style and creation, was the trend of the moment. Much of it was disjointed (as in the style of Joyce) and subversive. Contemporary themes, however, were written by writers who lived after the Second World War and were dealing with life in the modern century – in the examples given, in America. Themes included bigotry, technology, the Cold War; being a misfit, a minority, and despair at not belonging, meaninglessness of life; economic fragility; Civil Rights; and feminism. Both Modernism and Contemporary literature reflects its particular age in different ways.
