What is People?

The study of people sits at the center of nearly every academic discipline, from sociology and psychology to literature, public health, and political science. Essays grouped under this broad topic examine human behavior, identity, social roles, and the systems that shape individual lives. Because the subject touches so many fields, students encounter it in introductory composition courses, upper-division humanities seminars, and professional programs alike. Works like Sophocles' Oedipus the King and Langston Hughes' "Night Funeral in Harlem" appear alongside nursing research and immigration policy, reflecting how questions about what it means to be human cross disciplinary boundaries and resist simple answers.

The papers archived here take a wide range of approaches. Literary analysis appears in close readings of Hughes and Sophocles, while social and policy perspectives drive essays on immigration, reintegration after incarceration, and technology dependence. Applied professional angles emerge in work on nursing evidence-based practice, physical education teacher burnout, and strategic staffing. Personal narrative and descriptive writing feature in essays about historical figures and memorable life events, while research-oriented pieces examine extracurricular activity, premarital factors, and quality improvement initiatives. This variety shows that writing about people can mean analyzing a character, evaluating a workplace policy, or reflecting on lived experience.

A strong essay on any aspect of this topic needs a focused, arguable thesis rather than a general statement about humanity. Evidence that carries weight includes specific examples, credible research, or close textual detail depending on the assignment type. The most common pitfall is scope creep — trying to address all of society when the essay should examine one clear issue, case, or idea in meaningful depth.

Benefits of Legalizing Marijuana
Abstract Marijuana has been illegal for more than 70 years in the United States, but there still is nothing to show for it. Cannabis remains the country’s greatest cash crop and marijuana, the drug with the highest number of teenage users, despite the harsh penalties that the law imposes upon those found in possession of it. This text explores this, and other concerns, to prove why the legalization of marijuana would yield more benefits than those possibly derived from its illegalization.

Response to Themes in Barry\'s Machine Man
Originally published in 2011, Max Barry’s futuristic science fiction novel “Machine Man” was first made available to readers as an online serial, before being updated and collected into a full-fledged book. Barry bucked publishing industry protocol and posted excerpts from his “Machine Man” to his personal website, imploring his regular readers to submit criticism and feedback in the hope of collectively shaping his creative vision. As one of the first literary works to be “crowdsourced” in terms of content, the version of “Machine Man” which emerged from this collaborative process is, much like its conflicted protagonist, an amalgamation of various constituent parts which comes together to form a harmonious whole. Barry’s thematic thrust with the novel – which tells the tale of Charles Neumann, a subordinate scientist working for a military research conglomerate known as Better Future – is humanity’s ceaseless pursuit of perfection, and the consequences awaiting those who refuse to accept the concept of limitation. The tale of Neumann is one of alienation among humanity, as the lowly lab worker struggles to relate to those around him during the book’s introductory passages. When the aloof Neumann reveals to the reader through first-person narration that “I am not a people person. Whenever I'm evaluated, I score very low on social metrics. My ex-boss said she had never seen anyone score a zero on Interpersonal Empathy before ... If anyone is having a party, I am not invited” (Barry 6), the confession serves as both character development and foreshadowing. After admitting that he is not a “people person,” Neumann undergoes a transformative process intended to turn those prophetic words into reality, as a gruesome injury forces him to systematically replace the parts of his person that make him like other people.
